Egypt was the main exporter of anionic surface-active agents (excluding soap) in Africa, with the volume of exports reaching X tons, which was near 82% of total exports in 2021. It was distantly followed by South Africa (X tons), constituting a 13% share of total exports. Nigeria (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Cote d'Ivoire (X tons), Sudan (X tons), Ethiopia (X tons), Libya (X tons), Ghana (X tons) and Nigeria (X tons) held a relatively small share of total imports.
Algeria was also the fastest-growing in terms of the anionic surface-active agents (excluding soap) imports, with a CAGR of +31.7% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Cote d'Ivoire (+20.8%), Sudan (+15.9%), Kenya (+15.4%), Ghana (+13.4%), Tanzania (+12.8%), Ethiopia (+12.3%), Morocco (+11.6%), Egypt (+9.3%), Libya (+7.8%) and Tunisia (+7.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. By contrast, South Africa (-1.1%) and Nigeria (-12.0%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Algeria (+21 p.p.), Kenya (+1.9 p.p.) and Cote d'Ivoire (+1.8 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2021, the share of Tunisia (-2.8 p.p.), South Africa (-8 p.p.) and Nigeria (-16.3 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Algeria ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported anionic surface-active agents (excluding soap) in Africa, comprising 27% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Tunisia ($X), with a 9.1% share of total imports. It was followed by Morocco, with a 7.6% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Algeria totaled +29.6%. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Tunisia (+4.7% per year) and Morocco (+8.9% per year).
Import Prices by Country
In 2021, the import price in Africa amounted to $X per ton, picking up by 16% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, saw a mild descent. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Egypt ($X per ton), while Tanzania ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
