The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of 31% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2021, and then reduced in the following year.

In value terms, anise, badian, fennel and coriander exports rose sharply to $X in 2022. Overall, exports, however, recorded a remarkable increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 when exports increased by 25% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure in 2022 and are likely to continue growth in the near future.

Egypt was the main exporter of anise, badian, fennel and coriander in Africa, with the volume of exports accounting for X tons, which was near 59% of total exports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Morocco (X tons), creating a 33% share of total exports. Ethiopia (X tons) took a relatively small share of total exports.

In value terms, Egypt ($X) remains the largest anise, badian, fennel and coriander supplier in Africa, comprising 69% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Morocco ($X), with a 24% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Egypt totaled +5.7%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Morocco (+8.3% per year) and Ethiopia (-6.0% per year).

As a result, the export price reached the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Over the period under review, imports, however, continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 with an increase of 77% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tons in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, anise, badian, fennel and coriander imports fell to $X in 2022. In general, imports, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 when imports increased by 62%. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

The purchases of the three major importers of anise, badian, fennel and coriander, namely Morocco, South Africa and Egypt, represented more than half of total import. It was distantly followed by Algeria (X tons) and Somalia (X tons), together committing a 17% share of total imports. Tunisia (X tons) and Kenya (X tons) took a little share of total imports.

Somalia, with a CAGR of +18.3%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in Africa amounted to $X per ton, increasing by 20% against the previous year. Overall, the import price showed a relatively flat trend pattern. As a result, import price attained the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Morocco ($X per ton), while Tunisia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Algeria (+4.7%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
