The African antibiotic market shrank dramatically to $X in 2021, falling by -16.6% against the previous year. Overall, consumption continues to indicate a mild downturn. As a result, consumption attained the peak level of $X. From 2016 to 2021, the growth of the market remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, antibiotic production contracted to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. The total output value increased at an average annual rate of +3.7% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 37%. As a result, production reached the peak level of $X, and then declined in the following year.

Antibiotic exports surged to X tons in 2021, with an increase of 38% on 2020. Overall, exports, however, continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when exports increased by 47%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the peak figure at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, antibiotic exports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. In general, exports, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The level of export peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

In 2021, South Africa (X tons) represented the largest exporter of antibiotics, creating 64% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Egypt (X tons), comprising a 25% share of total exports. Mauritius (X tons), Mozambique (X tons) and Kenya (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to antibiotic exports from South Africa stood at -2.2%. At the same time, Mozambique (+90.8%), Mauritius (+28.4%), Egypt (+25.4%) and Kenya (+2.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Mozambique emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Africa, with a CAGR of +90.8% from 2012-2021. Egypt (+22 p.p.), Mauritius (+2.7 p.p.) and Mozambique (+2.1 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while South Africa saw its share reduced by -10.5% from 2012 to 2021, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Egypt ($X), South Africa ($X) and Mozambique ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2021, together accounting for 84% of total exports.

Mozambique, with a CAGR of +67.2%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, among the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in Africa amounted to $X per ton, with an increase of 6.3% against the previous year. In general, the export price recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when the export price increased by 47%. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Mozambique ($X per ton), while South Africa ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by South Africa (+3.0%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

In 2021, purchases abroad of antibiotics decreased by -11.7% to X tons, falling for the second consecutive year after two years of growth. Overall, imports recorded a mild descent. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 with an increase of 34%. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2016 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, antibiotic imports plummeted to $X in 2021. In general, imports recorded a mild curtailment. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when imports increased by 12%. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X, and then dropped sharply in the following year.

Imports by Country

Nigeria was the key importing country with an import of around X tons, which finished at 31% of total imports. South Africa (X tons) took a 15% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Ghana (8.9%), Egypt (6.9%), Kenya (6.8%), Algeria (6.6%) and Morocco (5.6%).

Nigeria was also the fastest-growing in terms of the antibiotics imports, with a CAGR of +12.6% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Kenya (+4.9%) and Morocco (+1.8%) displayed positive paces of growth. Ghana experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Algeria (-1.9%), South Africa (-4.7%) and Egypt (-16.5%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Nigeria (+22 p.p.) and Kenya (+2.9 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2021, the share of South Africa (-5.3 p.p.) and Egypt (-23.7 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Egypt ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported antibiotics in Africa, comprising 29% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Algeria ($X), with a 14% share of total imports. It was followed by Morocco, with a 12% share.

In Egypt, antibiotic imports shrank by an average annual rate of -5.9% over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Algeria (-0.7% per year) and Morocco (-0.0% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2021, declining by -6.3% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when the import price increased by 19% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, import prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Egypt ($X per ton), while Nigeria ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
