Antimony Market Size in Africa

The African antimony market declined modestly to $X in 2022, with a decrease of -4% against the previous year. Over the period under review, consumption showed a abrupt curtailment. Over the period under review, the market attained the maximum level at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, consumption failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, antimony production dropped to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Overall, production, however, faced a significant curtailment. In 2022, shipments abroad of antimony decreased by -0.2% to X tons, falling for the second year in a row after two years of growth. Over the period under review, exports, however, enjoyed a remarkable increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 309% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, antimony exports surged to $X in 2022. In general, exports, however, showed a strong increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 with an increase of 309%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. From 2018 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

Morocco represented the largest exporter of antimony in Africa, with the volume of exports accounting for X tons, which was near 67% of total exports in 2022. South Africa (X tons) held the second position in the ranking, distantly followed by Mozambique (X tons). All these countries together took near 30% share of total exports. Botswana (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Morocco was also the fastest-growing in terms of the antimony exports, with a CAGR of +19.3% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Mozambique (+2.9%) and South Africa (+1.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. By contrast, Botswana (-15.9%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Morocco (+29 p.p.), Mozambique (+10 p.p.) and Botswana (+1.6 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2022, the share of South Africa (-39 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest antimony supplier in Africa, comprising 67% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Morocco ($X), with a 23% share of total exports. It was followed by Botswana, with a 5.6% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in South Africa stood at +4.1%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Morocco (+14.1% per year) and Botswana (+93.6% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in Africa amounted to $X per ton, picking up by 75% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, recorded a abrupt curtailment. Over the period under review, the export prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Botswana ($X per ton), while Mozambique ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Botswana (+130.2%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

Antimony Imports

Imports in Africa

In 2022, the amount of antimony imported in Africa dropped significantly to X tons, declining by -18.8% on the year before. Over the period under review, imports continue to indicate a mild slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of 52% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, antimony imports declined to $X in 2022. In general, imports recorded a pronounced descent. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 69%. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

In 2022, South Africa (X tons), distantly followed by Algeria (X tons), Namibia (X tons), Zambia (X tons), Zimbabwe (X tons), Kenya (X tons) and Nigeria (X tons) were the major importers of antimony, together mixing up 88% of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Namibia (with a CAGR of +77.7%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest antimony importing markets in Africa were South Africa ($X), Algeria ($X) and Zimbabwe ($X), with a combined 64% share of total imports. Zambia, Kenya, Nigeria and Namibia lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 24%.

Among the main importing countries, Namibia, with a CAGR of +34.7%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2022, jumping by 23% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, continues to indicate a mild curtailment. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when the import price increased by 25% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices attained the maximum at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Zimbabwe ($X per ton), while Namibia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
