Apple Juice Market Size in Africa
In 2021, the African apple juice market decreased by -20% to $X, falling for the second consecutive year after two years of growth. The total consumption indicated a slight expansion from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +1.7% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, consumption decreased by -35.0% against 2019 indices. As a result, consumption reached the peak level of $X. From 2020 to 2021, the growth of the market remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, apple juice production rose modestly to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. The total production indicated measured growth from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +3.4% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, production decreased by -2.8% against 2019 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when the production volume increased by 57% against the previous year. As a result, production attained the peak level of $X. From 2020 to 2021, production growth remained at a lower figure.

In 2021, overseas shipments of apple juice (single strength) were finally on the rise to reach X tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year declining trend. Overall, exports, however, showed a perceptible slump. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 30% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, apple juice exports expanded remarkably to $X in 2021. In general, exports, however, continue to indicate a drastic downturn. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.
Exports by Country
The biggest shipments were from South Africa (X tons), together finishing at 99% of total export.
South Africa was also the fastest-growing in terms of the apple juice (single strength) exports, with a CAGR of -2.5% from 2012 to 2021. While the share of South Africa (+1.7 p.p.) increased significantly, the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, South Africa ($X) also remains the largest apple juice supplier in Africa.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in South Africa amounted to -5.2%.
Export Prices by Country
In 2021, the export price in Africa amounted to $X per ton, remaining relatively unchanged against the previous year. In general, the export price continues to indicate a perceptible downturn. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when the export price increased by 56%. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
As there is only one major export destination, the average price level is determined by prices for South Africa.
From 2012 to 2021, the rate of growth in terms of prices for South Africa amounted to -2.7% per year.

In 2021, supplies from abroad of apple juice (single strength) increased by 59% to X tons, rising for the third consecutive year after two years of decline. Total imports indicated prominent growth from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +9.8% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +106.5% against 2018 indices. As a result, imports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
In value terms, apple juice imports soared to $X in 2021. Total imports indicated buoyant growth from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +8.1% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +85.2% against 2018 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 with an increase of 65% against the previous year. The level of import peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.
Imports by Country
In 2021, Ghana (X tons), distantly followed by Libya (X tons), Nigeria (X tons), Somalia (X tons), Botswana (X tons), Namibia (X tons) and Cabo Verde (X tons) were the largest importers of apple juice (single strength), together generating 56% of total imports. Seychelles (X tons), Central African Republic (X tons), Mozambique (X tons), Mali (X tons), Gabon (X tons) and Tanzania (X tons) took a little share of total imports.
Imports into Ghana increased at an average annual rate of +9.1% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Mali (+59.1%), Tanzania (+38.8%), Botswana (+37.8%), Mozambique (+30.4%), Central African Republic (+22.8%), Cabo Verde (+17.8%), Somalia (+15.2%), Nigeria (+13.6%), Seychelles (+9.3%), Namibia (+7.8%), Libya (+2.6%) and Gabon (+1.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Mali emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Africa, with a CAGR of +59.1% from 2012-2021. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Botswana, Mali, Mozambique, Central African Republic, Cabo Verde, Somalia, Tanzania and Nigeria increased by +5.1, +3, +3, +2.5, +2.3, +2.3, +2 and +1.9 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, the largest apple juice importing markets in Africa were Ghana ($X), Nigeria ($X) and Libya ($X), together accounting for 33% of total imports. These countries were followed by Botswana, Namibia, Mozambique, Seychelles, Cabo Verde, Somalia, Central African Republic, Mali, Tanzania and Gabon, which together accounted for a further 42%.
Mali, with a CAGR of +61.6%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
The import price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2021, with a decrease of -16.4% against the previous year. In general, the import price recorded a slight downturn. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 when the import price increased by 10%. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2014 to 2021, the import prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Nigeria ($X per ton), while Somalia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Seychelles (+6.8%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
