Apricot Market Size in Africa
In 2022, the African apricot market decreased by -24.2% to $X for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year rising trend. In general, consumption showed a noticeable setback. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, consumption failed to regain momentum.
Apricot Production in Africa
In value terms, apricot production shrank to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. In general, production recorded a pronounced decline. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 28%. Over the period under review, production reached the maximum level at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Algeria (X tons) remains the largest apricot producing country in Africa, comprising approx. 51% of total volume. Moreover, apricot production in Algeria exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, Morocco (X tons), twofold. Tunisia (X tons) ranked third in terms of total production with a 10% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of volume in Algeria totaled -3.5%. The remaining producing countries recorded the following average annual rates of production growth: Morocco (-3.5% per year) and Tunisia (+1.3% per year).
The average apricot yield contracted to X tons per ha in 2022, falling by -10.9% compared with 2021 figures. Over the period under review, the yield showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 with an increase of 18% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the apricot yield attained the maximum level at X tons per ha in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, the yield stood at a somewhat lower figure. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.
The apricot harvested area shrank to X ha in 2022, falling by -8.3% compared with the previous year. Overall, the harvested area recorded a noticeable decline. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when the harvested area increased by 7.3% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the harvested area dedicated to apricot production reached the peak figure at X ha in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the harvested area remained at a lower figure.
Apricot Exports
Exports in Africa
In 2022, overseas shipments of apricots increased by 27% to X tons, rising for the second consecutive year after six years of decline. In general, exports, however, recorded a deep downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 with an increase of 52% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons. From 2015 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, apricot exports expanded sharply to $X in 2022. Overall, exports, however, showed a pronounced curtailment. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 when exports increased by 49% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. From 2015 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
Exports by Country
South Africa dominates exports structure, recording X tons, which was near 84% of total exports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Tunisia (X tons), generating an 8.8% share of total exports. Egypt (X tons) and Morocco (X tons) held a minor share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to apricot exports from South Africa stood at -4.7%. At the same time, Morocco (+5.7%) and Egypt (+2.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Morocco emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Africa, with a CAGR of +5.7% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Tunisia (-18.0%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. South Africa (+18 p.p.), Egypt (+2.2 p.p.) and Morocco (+1.9 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Tunisia saw its share reduced by -22.3% from 2012 to 2022, respectively.
In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest apricot supplier in Africa, comprising 83% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Tunisia ($X), with an 11% share of total exports. It was followed by Egypt, with a 3.2% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in South Africa stood at -1.6%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Tunisia (-8.9% per year) and Egypt (+3.0% per year).
Export Prices by Country
In 2022, the export price in Africa amounted to $X per ton, waning by -10.3% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, continues to indicate pronounced growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 when the export price increased by 40%. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2021, and then fell in the following year.
Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, major exporting countries recorded the following prices: in Tunisia ($X per ton) and South Africa ($X per ton), while Morocco ($X per ton) and Egypt ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Tunisia (+11.1%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Apricot Imports
Imports in Africa
After two years of growth, supplies from abroad of apricots decreased by -14.5% to X tons in 2022. Overall, imports, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 with an increase of 259% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, apricot imports shrank to $X in 2022. In general, imports, however, showed a perceptible expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when imports increased by 133%. The level of import peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Imports by Country
Libya was the key importer of apricots in Africa, with the volume of imports amounting to X tons, which was near 62% of total imports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Egypt (X tons), making up a 32% share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main importing countries, was attained by Libya (with a CAGR of +6.9%).
In value terms, the largest apricot importing markets in Africa were Libya ($X) and Egypt ($X).
Libya, with a CAGR of +8.4%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review.
Import Prices by Country
In 2022, the import price in Africa amounted to $X per ton, therefore, remained relatively stable against the previous year. Import price indicated mild growth from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +1.8% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, apricot import price decreased by -10.0% against 2017 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 when the import price increased by 71% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, import prices remained at a lower figure.
Average prices varied noticeably amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Egypt ($X per ton), while Libya amounted to $X per ton.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Egypt (+2.5%).
