The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when exports increased by 410%. The volume of export peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.

In value terms, areca nut exports soared to $X in 2022. In general, exports posted a significant increase. As a result, the exports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

South Africa was the key exporting country with an export of around X tons, which resulted at 80% of total exports. Tanzania (X tons) took a 12% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by Nigeria (7.5%).

As a result, imports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

From 2012 to 2022, the share of Morocco, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Mauritius, Kenya and South Africa increased by +8.8, +3.9, +3.3, +3.1 and +2.6 percentage points, while the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported areca nuts in Africa, comprising 69% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Morocco ($X), with a 10% share of total imports. It was followed by Democratic Republic of the Congo, with a 5.5% share.
