In 2022, overseas shipments of areca nuts increased by 356% to X tons, rising for the fourth year in a row after three years of decline. Overall, exports enjoyed a significant expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when exports increased by 410%. The volume of export peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.
In value terms, areca nut exports soared to $X in 2022. In general, exports posted a significant increase. As a result, the exports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
Exports by Country
South Africa was the key exporting country with an export of around X tons, which resulted at 80% of total exports. Tanzania (X tons) took a 12% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by Nigeria (7.5%).
South Africa was also the fastest-growing in terms of the areca nuts exports, with a CAGR of +179.7% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Nigeria (+28.0%) and Tanzania (+22.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in South Africa totaled +191.9%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Tanzania (+4.4% per year) and Nigeria (+27.7% per year).

The export price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2022, rising by 148% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, showed a noticeable setback. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per ton), while Nigeria ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.4% from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. As a result, imports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

South Africa represented the main importing country with an import of about X tons, which accounted for 70% of total imports. Morocco (X tons) took the second position in the ranking, followed by Kenya (X tons). All these countries together held approx. 15% share of total imports. The following importers - Democratic Republic of the Congo (X tons) and Mauritius (X tons) - each finished at an 8.2% share of total imports.
Imports into South Africa increased at an average annual rate of +1.8% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Democratic Republic of the Congo (+32.1%), Mauritius (+20.8%), Morocco (+20.5%) and Kenya (+13.4%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Democratic Republic of the Congo emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Africa, with a CAGR of +32.1% from 2012-2022. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Morocco, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Mauritius, Kenya and South Africa increased by +8.8, +3.9, +3.3, +3.1 and +2.6 percentage points, while the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, South Africa ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported areca nuts in Africa, comprising 69% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Morocco ($X), with a 10% share of total imports. It was followed by Democratic Republic of the Congo, with a 5.5% share.
In South Africa, areca nut imports expanded at an average annual rate of +2.8% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Morocco (+22.9% per year) and Democratic Republic of the Congo (+17.1% per year).
Import Prices by Country
The import price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2022, surging by 5.8% against the previous year. Over the last decade, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.6%. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 when the import price increased by 17% against the previous year. The level of import peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.
Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, major importing countries recorded the following prices: in Democratic Republic of the Congo ($X per ton) and Mauritius ($X per ton), while Kenya ($X per ton) and Morocco ($X per ton) were amongst the lowest.
