The market value increased at an average annual rate of +2.6% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. In 2021, shipments abroad of aromatic alcohols and their derivatives increased by 86% to X tons, rising for the second consecutive year after two years of decline. Overall, exports showed a prominent expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 with an increase of 107% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.

In value terms, aromatic alcohols exports surged to $X in 2021. In general, exports continue to indicate a strong expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 with an increase of 104%. The level of export peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.

Exports by Country

South Africa prevails in exports structure, resulting at X tons, which was near 90% of total exports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Togo (X tons), making up a 6% share of total exports. Swaziland (X tons) held a minor share of total exports.

South Africa was also the fastest-growing in terms of the aromatic alcohols and their derivatives exports, with a CAGR of +30.1% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Swaziland (+9.1%) and Togo (+4.4%) displayed positive paces of growth. While the share of South Africa (+50 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2021, the share of Swaziland (-3 p.p.) and Togo (-13.7 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest aromatic alcohols supplier in Africa, comprising 85% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Swaziland ($X), with a 3.5% share of total exports.

In South Africa, aromatic alcohols exports increased at an average annual rate of +10.9% over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Swaziland (+5.1% per year) and Togo (+2.0% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2021, dropping by -18.7% against the previous year. Overall, the export price continues to indicate a deep slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 an increase of 26% against the previous year. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2014 to 2021, the export prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Swaziland ($X per ton), while Togo ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Togo (-2.3%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Imports in Africa

In 2021, the amount of aromatic alcohols and their derivatives imported in Africa surged to X tons, with an increase of 16% against the previous year's figure. Total imports indicated a slight increase from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.9% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +27.9% against 2017 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 when imports increased by 68%. The volume of import peaked in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.

In value terms, aromatic alcohols imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports, however, showed a pronounced curtailment. The level of import peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2021, Egypt (X tons) represented the key importer of aromatic alcohols and their derivatives, making up 54% of total imports. South Africa (X tons) held a 24% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Nigeria (5.7%). Morocco (X tons), Botswana (X tons) and Gabon (X tons) took a minor share of total imports.

Imports into Egypt increased at an average annual rate of +13.0% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Botswana (+49.6%), Gabon (+36.0%), Nigeria (+9.7%), Morocco (+3.8%) and South Africa (+2.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Botswana emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Africa, with a CAGR of +49.6% from 2012-2021. While the share of Egypt (+33 p.p.), Nigeria (+2.8 p.p.), Botswana (+2.2 p.p.) and Gabon (+1.6 p.p.) increased significantly, the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, the largest aromatic alcohols importing markets in Africa were Egypt ($X), South Africa ($X) and Nigeria ($X), with a combined 70% share of total imports. These countries were followed by Morocco, Botswana and Gabon, which together accounted for a further 5.6%.

Botswana, with a CAGR of +50.8%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2021, increasing by 18% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, continues to indicate a noticeable reduction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 when the import price increased by 20% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Morocco ($X per ton), while Gabon ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
