In 2021, after two years of decline, there was significant growth in the African aromatic polyamines market, when its value increased by 5.4% to $X. The total consumption indicated strong growth from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +6.6% over the last nine-year period. In 2021, overseas shipments of aromatic polyamines and their derivatives, salts thereof decreased by -14.8% to X tons, falling for the fourth year in a row after two years of growth. In general, exports recorded a dramatic curtailment. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when exports increased by 116%. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, aromatic polyamines exports declined to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports faced a sharp decline. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 when exports increased by 57%. The level of export peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

South Africa dominates exports structure, recording X tons, which was near 89% of total exports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Kenya (X kg), achieving a 9.8% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to aromatic polyamines exports from South Africa stood at -34.2%. At the same time, Kenya (+21.6%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Kenya emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Africa, with a CAGR of +21.6% from 2012-2021. While the share of South Africa (+22 p.p.) and Kenya (+9.8 p.p.) increased significantly, the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest aromatic polyamines supplier in Africa, comprising 59% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Kenya ($X), with a 29% share of total exports.

The export price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2021, rising by 11% against the previous year. Overall, the export price recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 an increase of 194% against the previous year. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2019 to 2021, the export prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Kenya ($X per ton), while South Africa stood at $X per ton.

In 2021, supplies from abroad of aromatic polyamines and their derivatives, salts thereof increased by 24% to X tons for the first time since 2017, thus ending a three-year declining trend. Over the period under review, imports, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at X tons in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

South Africa represented the largest importing country with an import of around X tons, which recorded 72% of total imports. Imports into South Africa increased at an average annual rate of +1.3% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Ethiopia (+9.9%), Tunisia (+8.9%), Algeria (+5.6%) and Niger (+1.5%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Ethiopia emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Africa, with a CAGR of +9.9% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Nigeria (-3.5%) and Egypt (-4.8%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. South Africa (+8.5 p.p.) and Tunisia (+2 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Egypt saw its share reduced by -6.5% from 2012 to 2021, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported aromatic polyamines and their derivatives, salts thereof in Africa, comprising 67% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Egypt ($X), with a 13% share of total imports. It was followed by Tunisia, with a 4.2% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in South Africa was relatively modest. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Egypt (-4.3% per year) and Tunisia (+4.6% per year).

In 2021, the import price in Africa amounted to $X per ton, growing by 20% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, saw a mild decrease.
