Artichoke Market Size in Africa

The African artichoke market expanded sharply to $X in 2022, growing by 7% against the previous year. In general, consumption, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Artichoke Production in Africa

In value terms, artichoke production expanded rapidly to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production, however, recorded a slight contraction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 when the production volume increased by 57% against the previous year. Over the period under review, production attained the peak level at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, production failed to regain momentum.

Egypt (X tons) constituted the country with the largest volume of artichoke production, accounting for 61% of total volume. Moreover, artichoke production in Egypt exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, Algeria (X tons), threefold. The third position in this ranking was taken by Morocco (X tons), with an 8.4% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume in Egypt amounted to -2.1%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Algeria (+8.7% per year) and Morocco (-3.9% per year).

In 2022, the average artichoke yield in Africa reached X tons per ha, approximately equating the previous year. Over the period under review, the yield, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 with an increase of 10%. Over the period under review, the artichoke yield hit record highs at X tons per ha in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the yield remained at a lower figure. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

In 2022, the artichoke harvested area in Africa amounted to X ha, remaining stable against 2021. Overall, the harvested area showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 39%. As a result, the harvested area reached the peak level of X ha. From 2018 to 2022, the growth of the artichoke harvested area failed to regain momentum.

Exports in Africa

In 2022, shipments abroad of artichokes increased by 2.5% to X tons for the first time since 2019, thus ending a two-year declining trend. Overall, exports continue to indicate significant growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when exports increased by 190% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, artichoke exports declined slightly to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports posted significant growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 when exports increased by 214% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

Tunisia was the major exporter of artichokes in Africa, with the volume of exports recording X tons, which was approx. 71% of total exports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Egypt (X tons), committing a 24% share of total exports. South Africa (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Tunisia was also the fastest-growing in terms of the artichokes exports, with a CAGR of +49.4% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Egypt (+19.5%) and South Africa (+1.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. Tunisia (+45 p.p.) and Egypt (+24 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while South Africa saw its share reduced by -64% from 2012 to 2022, respectively.

In value terms, the largest artichoke supplying countries in Africa were Tunisia ($X), Egypt ($X) and South Africa ($X), with a combined 99% share of total exports.

Tunisia, with a CAGR of +41.6%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, among the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the exports figures.

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in Africa amounted to $X per ton, shrinking by -5.4% against the previous year. Overall, the export price recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when the export price increased by 19%. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Egypt ($X per ton), while South Africa ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Egypt (+8.7%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

In 2022, the amount of artichokes imported in Africa soared to X tons, growing by 70% against 2021. Overall, imports posted significant growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 451%. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, artichoke imports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. In general, imports enjoyed a significant expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 when imports increased by 234% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

Nigeria prevails in imports structure, reaching X tons, which was approx. 91% of total imports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Algeria (X tons), generating a 7.9% share of total imports.

Imports into Nigeria increased at an average annual rate of +68.6% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Algeria (+78.8%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Algeria emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Africa, with a CAGR of +78.8% from 2012-2022. While the share of Nigeria (+85 p.p.) and Algeria (+7.7 p.p.) increased significantly, the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Nigeria ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported artichokes in Africa, comprising 81% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Algeria ($X), with a 15% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in Nigeria totaled +52.3%.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2022, dropping by -21.3% against the previous year. In general, the import price saw a abrupt setback. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 when the import price increased by 30% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices reached the maximum at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Algeria ($X per ton), while Nigeria stood at $X per ton.
