The African rolled bitumen articles market shrank to $X in 2021, remaining constant against the previous year. The market value increased at an average annual rate of +3.0% over the period from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2020, and then dropped slightly in the following year.

In value terms, rolled bitumen articles production contracted to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. The total production indicated a pronounced increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +3.6% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, production increased by +43.8% against 2017 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when the production volume increased by 35% against the previous year. The level of production peaked at $X in 2020, and then shrank in the following year.

Exports in Africa

In 2021, overseas shipments of articles of bitumen in rolls increased by 20% to X square meters for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year declining trend. Overall, exports, however, saw a mild reduction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 32%. The volume of export peaked at X square meters in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, rolled bitumen articles exports surged to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports, however, saw a abrupt slump. The level of export peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

Egypt dominates exports structure, finishing at X square meters, which was near 89% of total exports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Morocco (X square meters), making up a 4.9% share of total exports. South Africa (X square meters) held a little share of total exports.

Exports from Egypt decreased at an average annual rate of -2.5% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Morocco (+38.4%) and South Africa (+9.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Morocco emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Africa, with a CAGR of +38.4% from 2012-2021. While the share of Morocco (+4.7 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2021, the share of Egypt (-4.3 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Egypt ($X) remains the largest rolled bitumen articles supplier in Africa, comprising 90% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Morocco ($X), with a 4% share of total exports.

In Egypt, rolled bitumen articles exports shrank by an average annual rate of -3.3% over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Morocco (+28.6% per year) and South Africa (+5.2% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in Africa amounted to $X per square meter, growing by 16% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, recorded a deep contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 an increase of 44%. Over the period under review, the export prices hit record highs at $X per square meter in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per square meter), while Morocco ($X per square meter) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Egypt (-0.9%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Imports in Africa

In 2021, after two years of decline, there was significant growth in supplies from abroad of articles of bitumen in rolls, when their volume increased by 34% to X square meters. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.2% from 2012 to 2021; the trend pattern remained consistent, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations being observed throughout the analyzed period. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, rolled bitumen articles imports surged to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The level of import peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2021, South Africa (X square meters), Morocco (X square meters), Nigeria (X square meters) and Cote d'Ivoire (X square meters) was the largest importer of articles of bitumen in rolls in Africa, constituting 53% of total import. Libya (X square meters) ranks next in terms of the total imports with a 5.4% share, followed by Senegal (4.7%). Mauritius (X square meters), Kenya (X square meters), Cameroon (X square meters), Tunisia (X square meters), Ghana (X square meters), Gabon (X square meters) and Algeria (X square meters) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the leading importing countries, was attained by Cote d'Ivoire (with a CAGR of +18.9%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Morocco ($X), South Africa ($X) and Cote d'Ivoire ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, together comprising 45% of total imports.

In terms of the main importing countries, Cote d'Ivoire, with a CAGR of +16.1%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Africa stood at $X per square meter in 2021, growing by 8.1% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, continues to indicate a noticeable downturn. The level of import peaked at $X per square meter in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Ghana ($X per square meter), while Senegal ($X per square meter) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Ghana (+3.0%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the import price figures.
