In 2021, the African cork article market increased by 2.4% to $X for the first time since 2016, thus ending a four-year declining trend. The market value increased at an average annual rate of +2.8% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, cork article production expanded slightly to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. In general, production continues to indicate notable growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2015 when the production volume increased by 733% against the previous year. The level of production peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, production remained at a lower figure.

Exports in Africa
In 2021, cork article exports in Africa surged to X tons, growing by 70% compared with the year before. Overall, exports, however, recorded a perceptible decline. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, cork article exports surged to $X in 2021. In general, exports showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 when exports increased by 53% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2015 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
Exports by Country
Algeria was the main exporting country with an export of about X tons, which accounted for 59% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Morocco (X tons) and Tunisia (X tons), together generating a 38% share of total exports.
Algeria was also the fastest-growing in terms of the cork articles exports, with a CAGR of +4.1% from 2012 to 2021. Morocco (-3.2%) and Tunisia (-13.4%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Algeria (+29 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2021, the share of Tunisia (-24.5 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, the largest cork article supplying countries in Africa were Morocco ($X), Algeria ($X) and Tunisia ($X), together accounting for 94% of total exports.
Algeria, with a CAGR of +3.8%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, among the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the exports figures.
Export Prices by Country
The export price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2021, declining by -15.4% against the previous year. Export price indicated temperate growth from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +4.4% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, cork article export price decreased by -24.0% against 2018 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 an increase of 33% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Morocco ($X per ton), while Algeria ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Tunisia (+12.2%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.
Cork Article Imports
Imports in Africa
For the third consecutive year, Africa recorded growth in supplies from abroad of cork articles, which increased by 10% to X tons in 2021. Total imports indicated a modest expansion from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.5% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +23.4% against 2018 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 when imports increased by 49% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2018 to 2021, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, cork article imports soared to $X in 2021. Total imports indicated measured growth from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.5% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
Imports by Country
In 2021, South Africa (X tons), Nigeria (X tons) and South Sudan (X tons) represented the largest importer of cork articles in Africa, generating 60% of total import. Somalia (X tons) held an 11% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Morocco (4.9%). The following importers - Sudan (X tons), Cabo Verde (X tons), Algeria (X tons), Democratic Republic of the Congo (X tons), Angola (X tons) and Egypt (X tons) - together made up 15% of total imports.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the key importing countries, was attained by South Sudan (with a CAGR of +86.6%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, South Africa ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported cork articles in Africa, comprising 44% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by South Sudan ($X), with a 20% share of total imports. It was followed by Somalia, with an 11% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in South Africa was relatively modest. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: South Sudan (+60.5% per year) and Somalia (+49.3% per year).
Import Prices by Country
The import price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2021, picking up by 41% against the previous year. Import price indicated measured growth from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +3.0% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Over the period under review, import prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, import prices failed to regain momentum.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per ton), while Democratic Republic of the Congo ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
