Twine Product Market Size in Africa

In 2021, the African twine product market decreased by -6.3% to $X for the first time since 2015, thus ending a five-year rising trend. Over the period under review, consumption, however, recorded a prominent expansion. Over the period under review, the market reached the peak level at $X in 2020, and then fell in the following year.

In value terms, twine product exports soared to $X in 2021. Overall, exports, however, recorded a perceptible shrinkage. The level of export peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In 2021, Tunisia (X tons) and South Africa (X tons) were the largest exporters of articles of twine, cordage, rope or cables in Africa, together committing 74% of total exports. Cote d'Ivoire (X tons) took a 15% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by Mauritius (6.3%).

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were in Mauritius (with a CAGR of +70.1%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest twine product supplying countries in Africa were South Africa ($X), Tunisia ($X) and Cote d'Ivoire ($X), together accounting for 87% of total exports. Mauritius lagged somewhat behind, accounting for a further 7.9%.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Mauritius ($X per ton), while Cote d'Ivoire ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

In 2021, purchases abroad of articles of twine, cordage, rope or cables increased by 30% to X tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year declining trend. Total imports indicated noticeable growth from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +4.9% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports decreased by -5.9% against 2018 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 61%. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2019 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +3.1% over the period from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. In 2021, Tanzania (X tons), followed by Algeria (X tons), South Africa (X tons), Morocco (X tons) and Mozambique (X tons) represented the key importers of articles of twine, cordage, rope or cables, together creating 48% of total imports. Ethiopia (X tons), Senegal (X tons), Ghana (X tons), Tunisia (X tons), Madagascar (X tons), Angola (X tons), Zambia (X tons) and Egypt (X tons) took a minor share of total imports.

The import price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2021, waning by -1.7% against the previous year. In general, the import price showed a slight reduction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 an increase of 12% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably country of destination: the country with the highest price was Tunisia ($X per ton), while Tanzania ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
