Articles Of Zinc Market Size in Africa

The African articles of zinc market expanded markedly to $X in 2021, with an increase of 7.1% against the previous year. The total consumption indicated a mild expansion from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +1.9% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, consumption decreased by -5.5% against 2019 indices. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, consumption failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, articles of zinc production rose markedly to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. The total production indicated a moderate expansion from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +2.0% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, production decreased by -5.9% against 2019 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 when the production volume increased by 27%. Over the period under review, production attained the maximum level at $X in 2019; afterwards, it flattened through to 2021.

Exports in Africa

In 2021, shipments abroad of articles of zinc increased by 23% to X tons, rising for the second consecutive year after two years of decline. In general, exports, however, showed a pronounced downturn. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 with an increase of 153%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons. From 2014 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, articles of zinc exports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports, however, recorded a noticeable contraction. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 when exports increased by 69% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. From 2014 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

In 2021, South Africa (X tons) and Tunisia (X tons) represented the major exporters of articles of zinc in Africa, together constituting 75% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Kenya (X tons), generating a 19% share of total exports. Morocco (X tons) held a relatively small share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Tunisia (with a CAGR of +9.8%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the exports figures.

In value terms, Tunisia ($X) remains the largest articles of zinc supplier in Africa, comprising 54% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by South Africa ($X), with a 21% share of total exports. It was followed by Kenya, with an 11% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in Tunisia totaled +8.2%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: South Africa (-2.5% per year) and Kenya (+1.8% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2021, dropping by -5.7% against the previous year. Export price indicated temperate growth from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +2.1% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, articles of zinc export price decreased by -3.7% against 2018 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 when the export price increased by 32% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Morocco ($X per ton), while South Africa ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by South Africa (+1.6%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

Imports in Africa

Articles of zinc imports soared to X tons in 2021, surging by 39% against the previous year. Overall, imports, however, showed a noticeable decline. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when imports increased by 46% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, articles of zinc imports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. In general, imports, however, recorded a mild slump. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

The purchases of the twelve major importers of articles of zinc, namely Morocco, Ghana, Tunisia, Libya, South Africa, Chad, Nigeria, Sudan, Cameroon, Ethiopia, Congo and Algeria, represented more than two-thirds of total import. Zambia (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the leading importing countries, was attained by Ethiopia (with a CAGR of +53.3%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest articles of zinc importing markets in Africa were Chad ($X), Morocco ($X) and Tunisia ($X), together accounting for 42% of total imports. These countries were followed by Libya, South Africa, Ghana, Algeria, Ethiopia, Sudan, Nigeria, Congo, Cameroon and Zambia, which together accounted for a further 38%.

In terms of the main importing countries, Ethiopia, with a CAGR of +56.4%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the import price in Africa amounted to $X per ton, declining by -4.8% against the previous year. Import price indicated a modest increase from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +1.8% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, articles of zinc import price decreased by -6.3% against 2018 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 an increase of 36% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, import prices failed to regain momentum.
