The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when exports increased by 168% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

South Africa dominates exports structure, finishing at X tons, which was approx. 91% of total exports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Tunisia (X kg), committing a 5% share of total exports. Egypt (X kg) followed a long way behind the leaders.

In South Africa, artificial fur exports decreased by an average annual rate of -11.7% over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Tunisia (+5.1% per year) and Egypt (+48.9% per year).

The export price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2022, picking up by 8.7% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price saw strong growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when the export price increased by 94% against the previous year. The level of export peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

In 2022, the amount of artificial fur imported in Africa surged to X tons, with an increase of 17% compared with the year before. Overall, imports, however, showed a perceptible curtailment. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when imports increased by 85%. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at X tons in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, artificial fur imports soared to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports posted a slight increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when imports increased by 123%. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

In 2022, South Africa (X tons) represented the largest importer of artificial fur, comprising 32% of total imports. It was distantly followed by Egypt (X tons), Ethiopia (X tons), Lesotho (X tons), Mauritania (X tons) and Nigeria (X tons), together committing a 46% share of total imports. Sudan (X tons), Rwanda (X tons), Niger (X tons) and Libya (X tons) took a minor share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to artificial fur imports into South Africa stood at +26.5%. At the same time, Rwanda (+37.4%), Sudan (+35.8%), Niger (+33.0%), Mauritania (+25.6%), Libya (+7.8%), Ethiopia (+7.7%) and Nigeria (+4.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Rwanda emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Africa, with a CAGR of +37.4% from 2012-2022. South Africa (+29 p.p.), Ethiopia (+7.7 p.p.), Mauritania (+6.6 p.p.), Sudan (+4.2 p.p.), Rwanda (+3.8 p.p.), Niger (+3.3 p.p.), Nigeria (+2.9 p.p.) and Libya (+1.7 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Lesotho and Egypt saw its share reduced by -2.5% and -58.1% from 2012 to 2022, respectively.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported artificial fur in Africa, comprising 50% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Lesotho ($X), with an 8.4% share of total imports. It was followed by Ethiopia, with a 7.7% share.

In South Africa, artificial fur imports increased at an average annual rate of +35.0% over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Lesotho (-13.3% per year) and Ethiopia (+10.3% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in Africa amounted to $X per ton, rising by 13% against the previous year. Import price indicated a tangible increase from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +4.0% over the last decade.
