In value terms, artificial and colloidal graphite production contracted to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. The total production indicated temperate growth from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +3.9% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, production increased by +62.9% against 2014 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when the production volume increased by 23%. As a result, production attained the peak level of $X, and then contracted in the following year.

In 2021, after two years of decline, there was significant growth in overseas shipments of artificial graphite, colloidal, semi-colloidal graphite and preparations, when their volume increased by 32% to X tons. Total exports indicated a buoyant expansion from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +6.4% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 when exports increased by 48% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, artificial and colloidal graphite exports shrank to $X in 2021. Total exports indicated a perceptible increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.8% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, exports decreased by -10.0% against 2018 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 with an increase of 46%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. From 2019 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

South Africa prevails in exports structure, amounting to X tons, which was approx. 96% of total exports in 2021. Cameroon (X tons) took a little share of total exports.

South Africa was also the fastest-growing in terms of the artificial graphite, colloidal, semi-colloidal graphite and preparations exports, with a CAGR of +6.4% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Cameroon (+5.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. The shares of the largest exporters remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest artificial and colloidal graphite supplier in Africa, comprising 95% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Cameroon ($X), with a 2.2% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in South Africa stood at +4.8%.

The export price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2021, waning by -28.9% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price saw a mild reduction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when the export price increased by 46%. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton, and then reduced dramatically in the following year.

Average prices varied noticeably amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per ton), while Cameroon stood at $X per ton.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Cameroon (+1.1%).

Imports in Africa

In 2021, the amount of artificial graphite, colloidal, semi-colloidal graphite and preparations imported in Africa soared to X tons, growing by 70% compared with 2020. Total imports indicated a pronounced increase from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +3.1% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports decreased by -16.5% against 2019 indices. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, artificial and colloidal graphite imports surged to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2021, Zimbabwe (X tons) and Zambia (X tons) represented the major importers of artificial graphite, colloidal, semi-colloidal graphite and preparations in Africa, together committing 52% of total imports. Egypt (X tons) held the next position in the ranking, followed by Gabon (X tons), South Africa (X tons) and Mozambique (X tons). All these countries together held near 37% share of total imports. Tunisia (X tons) held a minor share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the leading importing countries, was attained by Gabon (with a CAGR of +21.1%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest artificial and colloidal graphite importing markets in Africa were South Africa ($X), Zambia ($X) and Zimbabwe ($X), together comprising 59% of total imports. These countries were followed by Egypt, Gabon, Mozambique and Tunisia, which together accounted for a further 31%.

Gabon, with a CAGR of +19.8%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2021, dropping by -10.8% against the previous year. In general, the import price saw a pronounced downturn. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 when the import price increased by 18%. Over the period under review, import prices attained the peak figure at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per ton), while Gabon ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
