Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X units in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, orthopedic prosthetics exports rose notably to $X in 2022. In general, exports, however, continue to indicate a perceptible descent. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 43% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In 2022, South Africa (X units) was the key exporter of artificial parts of the body (excl. artificial teeth and dental fittings and artificial joints), making up 63% of total exports. Mauritius (X units) held the second position in the ranking, distantly followed by Morocco (X units) and Egypt (X units). All these countries together took approx. 32% share of total exports. Tunisia (X units) followed a long way behind the leaders.

The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +47.3% against 2020 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 when imports increased by 86% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of X units. In value terms, the largest orthopedic prosthetics importing markets in Africa were South Africa ($X), Egypt ($X) and Tunisia ($X), together comprising 65% of total imports. Morocco, Algeria, Libya, Mauritius, Tanzania and Niger lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 28%.

Niger, with a CAGR of +20.2%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
