From 2019 to 2021, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, artificial staple fibre exports declined notably to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports saw a deep reduction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 542% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2019 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

In 2021, South Africa (X tons) and Morocco (X tons) represented the major exporters of artificial staple fibres in Africa, together recording approx. 80% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Egypt (X tons), committing an 18% share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Morocco (with a CAGR of +84.5%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the exports figures.

The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 an increase of 129% against the previous year. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2020 to 2021, the export prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably country of origin: the country with the highest price was Egypt ($X per ton), while Morocco ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Egypt (+10.8%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

In 2021, artificial staple fibre imports in Africa dropped significantly to X tons, with a decrease of -46.6% on 2020 figures. In general, imports showed a deep slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 105% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2014 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, artificial staple fibre imports dropped significantly to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports showed a deep setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when imports increased by 114% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.
Imports by Country
Egypt (X tons), South Africa (X tons), Morocco (X tons) and Sudan (X tons) represented roughly 82% of total imports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Nigeria (X tons), constituting a 5.3% share of total imports. Senegal (X tons), Mauritius (X tons), Uganda (X tons) and Algeria (X tons) held a little share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Uganda (with a CAGR of +42.7%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Egypt ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported artificial staple fibres in Africa, comprising 47% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by South Africa ($X), with a 14% share of total imports. It was followed by Morocco, with a 12% share.
In Egypt, artificial staple fibre imports plunged by an average annual rate of -19.9% over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: South Africa (-17.6% per year) and Morocco (-10.0% per year).
Import Prices by Country
The import price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2021, reducing by -10.3% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 an increase of 34% against the previous year. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per ton, and then fell in the following year.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Egypt ($X per ton), while Mauritius ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Senegal (+6.8%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
