In 2020, shipments abroad of asbestos decreased by -X% to X tons for the first time since 2013, thus ending a six-year rising trend. Over the period under review, exports continue to indicate a sharp downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when exports increased by X% y-o-y. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2007; however, from 2008 to 2020, exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, asbestos exports shrank rapidly to $X in 2020. In general, exports saw a sharp slump. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 when exports increased by X% year-to-year. The level of export peaked at $X in 2007; however, from 2008 to 2020, exports failed to regain the momentum.

Exports by Country

The shipments of the three major exporters of asbestos, namely Tunisia, Congo and Senegal, represented more than two-thirds of total export. It was distantly followed by Nigeria (X tons), mixing up a X% share of total exports. Morocco (X tons), Kenya (X tons) and Botswana (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2007 to 2020, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the leading exporting countries, was attained by Botswana (+X% per year), while exports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Congo ($X), Nigeria ($X) and Tunisia ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2020, together accounting for X% of total exports. These countries were followed by Senegal, Morocco, Botswana and Kenya, which together accounted for a further X the main exporting countries, Botswana (+X% per year) recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The asbestos export price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2020, waning by -X% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price recorded a perceptible setback. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2009 when the export price increased by X% year-to-year. Over the period under review, export prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2020, export prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by the country of origin; the country with the highest price was Nigeria ($X per ton), while Kenya ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

In value terms, asbestos imports expanded notably to $X in 2020. Overall, imports, however, showed a modest expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of X% y-o-y. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at $X in 2009; however, from 2010 to 2020, imports failed to regain the momentum.

Imports by Country

Ghana was the main importer of asbestos in Africa, with the volume of imports reaching X tons, which was near X% of total imports in 2020. It was distantly followed by Zimbabwe (X tons), creating a X% share of total imports. Niger (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2007 to 2020, average annual rates of growth with regard to asbestos imports into Ghana stood at +X%. At the same time, Niger (+X%) and Zimbabwe (+X%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Niger emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Africa, with a CAGR of +X% from 2007-2020.
