Asparagus Market Size in Africa

The African asparagus market shrank modestly to $X in 2022, which is down by -3.8% against the previous year. Over the period under review, consumption, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Asparagus Production in Africa

In value terms, asparagus production expanded to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 40% against the previous year. Over the period under review, production reached the maximum level at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, production remained at a lower figure.

The countries with the highest volumes of production in 2022 were Morocco (X tons), Kenya (X tons) and Zimbabwe (X tons), together accounting for 45% of total production. Egypt, Tunisia, South Africa, Mozambique, Sudan and Madagascar lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 51%.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Mozambique (with a CAGR of +1.9%), while production for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The average asparagus yield declined significantly to X tons per ha in 2022, with a decrease of -23% on the year before. In general, the yield, however, showed modest growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when the yield increased by 74%. As a result, the yield attained the peak level of X tons per ha, and then declined rapidly in the following year. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

In 2022, approx. X ha of asparagus were harvested in Africa; with an increase of 34% against the previous year's figure. In general, the harvested area, however, recorded a deep slump. The level of harvested area peaked at X ha in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the harvested area remained at a lower figure.

In 2022, shipments abroad of asparagus increased by 51% to X tons, rising for the third year in a row after two years of decline. Over the period under review, exports, however, continue to indicate a abrupt descent. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 75% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, asparagus exports soared to $X in 2022. Overall, exports, however, recorded a pronounced contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 85% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

In 2022, Morocco (X tons) was the key exporter of asparagus, comprising 50% of total exports. It was distantly followed by South Africa (X tons), Madagascar (X tons) and Nigeria (X tons), together comprising a 44% share of total exports. Tunisia (X tons) took a little share of total exports.

Exports from Morocco decreased at an average annual rate of -9.8% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Madagascar (+92.9%) and Nigeria (+28.7%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Madagascar emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Africa, with a CAGR of +92.9% from 2012-2022. By contrast, South Africa (-2.0%) and Tunisia (-2.1%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Madagascar, South Africa and Nigeria increased by +19, +8 and +5.5 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Morocco ($X), Madagascar ($X) and South Africa ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2022, together comprising 79% of total exports.

In terms of the main exporting countries, Madagascar, with a CAGR of +108.8%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in Africa amounted to $X per ton, rising by 2.1% against the previous year. Export price indicated a measured expansion from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +3.0% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, asparagus export price decreased by -26.4% against 2020 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when the export price increased by 31%. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Tunisia ($X per ton), while South Africa ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Tunisia (+9.2%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in Africa

In 2022, asparagus imports in Africa reduced modestly to X tons, shrinking by -1.7% against the previous year's figure. Overall, imports, however, showed a strong expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 69%. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2021, and then declined in the following year.

In value terms, asparagus imports dropped to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports saw a noticeable curtailment. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 with an increase of 41% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

South Africa dominates imports structure, recording X tons, which was near 87% of total imports in 2022. Morocco (X tons) and Madagascar (X tons) held a relatively small share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to asparagus imports into South Africa stood at +16.3%. At the same time, Madagascar (+19.8%) and Morocco (+6.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Madagascar emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Africa, with a CAGR of +19.8% from 2012-2022. From 2012 to 2022, the share of South Africa and Madagascar increased by +32 and +2.7 percentage points, respectively.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported asparagus in Africa, comprising 48% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Madagascar ($X), with an 8.7% share of total imports.

In South Africa, asparagus imports shrank by an average annual rate of -5.9% over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Madagascar (+30.9% per year) and Morocco (+7.3% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in Africa amounted to $X per ton, declining by -4.3% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price recorded a deep reduction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 when the import price increased by 4.6%. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Madagascar ($X per ton), while South Africa ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
