Avocado Market Size in Africa

In 2022, the African avocado market decreased by -6.4% to $X for the first time since 2015, thus ending a six-year rising trend. The total consumption indicated a pronounced expansion from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +3.2% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Over the period under review, the market hit record highs at $X in 2021, and then dropped in the following year.

Avocado Production in Africa

In value terms, avocado production amounted to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. The total production indicated buoyant growth from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +5.9% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, production decreased by -3.5% against 2020 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 with an increase of 30% against the previous year. The level of production peaked at $X in 2020; afterwards, it flattened through to 2022.

Kenya (X tons) remains the largest avocado producing country in Africa, comprising approx. 35% of total volume. Moreover, avocado production in Kenya exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest producer, Ethiopia (X tons), threefold. The third position in this ranking was taken by Malawi (X tons), with a 9% share.

In Kenya, avocado production increased at an average annual rate of +8.3% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining producing countries recorded the following average annual rates of production growth: Ethiopia (+18.5% per year) and Malawi (+0.2% per year).

The average avocado yield reduced slightly to X tons per ha in 2022, waning by -4.1% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the yield, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 13% against the previous year. As a result, the yield reached the peak level of X tons per ha, and then fell slightly in the following year. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

In 2022, the total area harvested in terms of avocados production in Africa dropped to X ha, remaining stable against the previous year. The harvested area increased at an average annual rate of +3.9% over the period from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 13% against the previous year. The level of harvested area peaked at X ha in 2021, and then contracted modestly in the following year.

Exports in Africa

In 2022, approx. X tons of avocados were exported in Africa; rising by 24% on the year before. Over the period under review, exports continue to indicate buoyant growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when exports increased by 56%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.

In value terms, avocado exports surged to $X in 2022. Overall, exports posted a buoyant expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 when exports increased by 34%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum in 2022 and are likely to see gradual growth in the near future.

Exports by Country

The shipments of the three major exporters of avocados, namely Kenya, South Africa and Morocco, represented more than two-thirds of total export. It was distantly followed by Tanzania (X tons), creating an 8.3% share of total exports. The following exporters - Zimbabwe (X tons) and Burundi (X tons) - each recorded a 6% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Zimbabwe (with a CAGR of +45.8%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Morocco ($X), Kenya ($X) and South Africa ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2022, with a combined 91% share of total exports. Tanzania, Zimbabwe and Burundi lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 5.6%.

Tanzania, with a CAGR of +47.9%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, in terms of the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in Africa amounted to $X per ton, declining by -5.2% against the previous year. Over the last decade, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.5%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 an increase of 15%. Over the period under review, the export prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2021, and then reduced in the following year.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Morocco ($X per ton), while Burundi ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Tanzania (+7.0%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2022, after two years of growth, there was decline in overseas purchases of avocados, when their volume decreased by -4.3% to X tons. Total imports indicated noticeable growth from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +4.7% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +13.3% against 2018 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when imports increased by 77%. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2021, and then reduced modestly in the following year.

In value terms, avocado imports declined to $X in 2022. Overall, imports, however, saw a strong increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 30% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X, and then reduced in the following year.

Imports by Country

In 2022, Morocco (X tons) was the largest importer of avocados, comprising 38% of total imports. It was distantly followed by South Africa (X tons) and Egypt (X tons), together achieving a 39% share of total imports. Burkina Faso (X tons), Botswana (X tons), Namibia (X tons), Algeria (X tons) and Somalia (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Somalia (with a CAGR of +45.5%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Egypt ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported avocados in Africa, comprising 41% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Morocco ($X), with a 20% share of total imports. It was followed by South Africa, with a 14% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Egypt stood at +42.9%. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Morocco (-0.0% per year) and South Africa (-1.1% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in Africa amounted to $X per ton, dropping by -4.2% against the previous year. Import price indicated noticeable growth from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +3.2% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, avocado import price decreased by -6.2% against 2020 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when the import price increased by 25% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2022, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Egypt ($X per ton), while Burkina Faso ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
