The African baby carriage market surged to $X in 2022, with an increase of 26% against the previous year. Over the period under review, consumption showed a strong expansion. Over the period under review, the market attained the peak level in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.
Baby Carriage Production in Africa
In value terms, baby carriage production rose modestly to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. The total production indicated a perceptible expansion from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.0% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, production decreased by -4.1% against 2020 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 when the production volume increased by 33%. The level of production peaked at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports in Africa
After five years of decline, overseas shipments of baby carriages increased by 2.9% to X units in 2022. Over the period under review, exports recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 93%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X units. From 2017 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, baby carriage exports soared to $X in 2022. Overall, exports, however, continue to indicate a pronounced setback. The level of export peaked at $X in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Exports by Country
South Africa dominates exports structure, accounting for X units, which was near 81% of total exports in 2022. Rwanda (X units) took the second position in the ranking, followed by Tunisia (X units). All these countries together held near 14% share of total exports.
Exports from South Africa increased at an average annual rate of +1.1% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Rwanda (+58.1%) and Tunisia (+11.8%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Rwanda emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Africa, with a CAGR of +58.1% from 2012-2022. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Rwanda, Tunisia and South Africa increased by +8.8, +3.3 and +2.4 percentage points, while the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest baby carriage supplier in Africa, comprising 84% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Tunisia ($X), with an 8.4% share of total exports.
In South Africa, baby carriage exports shrank by an average annual rate of -4.0% over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Tunisia (+10.7% per year) and Rwanda (+40.4% per year).
Export Prices by Country
In 2022, the export price in Africa amounted to $X per unit, rising by 18% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, showed a noticeable decline. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when the export price increased by 22% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X per unit in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Tunisia ($X per unit), while Rwanda ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Tunisia (-0.9%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.
Baby Carriage Imports
Imports in Africa
In 2022, purchases abroad of baby carriages increased by 39% to X units, rising for the fifth year in a row after three years of decline. In general, imports saw a resilient increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 333% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.
In value terms, baby carriage imports surged to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports showed a remarkable increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 with an increase of 124% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure in 2022 and are likely to see gradual growth in the near future.
Imports by Country
Nigeria prevails in imports structure, reaching X units, which was approx. 91% of total imports in 2022. South Africa (X units) and Morocco (X units) took a little share of total imports.
Nigeria was also the fastest-growing in terms of the baby carriages imports, with a CAGR of +13.8% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Morocco (+1.0%) displayed positive paces of growth. By contrast, South Africa (-1.1%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Nigeria (+29 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Morocco and South Africa saw its share reduced by -2% and -5.7% from 2012 to 2022, respectively.
In value terms, Nigeria ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported baby carriages in Africa, comprising 78% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by South Africa ($X), with a 5.4% share of total imports.
In Nigeria, baby carriage imports increased at an average annual rate of +10.7% over the period from 2012-2022. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: South Africa (-5.3% per year) and Morocco (+2.7% per year).
Import Prices by Country
The import price in Africa stood at $X per unit in 2022, with an increase of 5.6% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, continues to indicate a noticeable slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 an increase of 13%. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per unit. From 2018 to 2022, the import prices remained at a lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Morocco ($X per unit), while Nigeria ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Morocco (+1.7%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the import price figures.
