The African bacon and ham market fell slightly to $X in 2022, shrinking by -4.3% against the previous year. In general, consumption saw a mild decrease. As a result, consumption attained the peak level of $X. From 2015 to 2022, the growth of the market remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, bacon and ham production stood at $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Over the period under review, production posted a mild increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when the production volume increased by 196%. As a result, production attained the peak level of $X. From 2015 to 2022, production growth remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports in Africa

In 2022, shipments abroad of bacon, ham and other dried, salted or smoked pig meat increased by 18% to X tons, rising for the second year in a row after two years of decline. In general, exports, however, showed a noticeable contraction. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 48%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons. From 2015 to 2022, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, bacon and ham exports rose sharply to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, exports, however, recorded a perceptible reduction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 45%. The level of export peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

South Africa (X tons) and Kenya (X tons) prevails in exports structure, together generating 89% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Rwanda (X tons), generating a 6.2% share of total exports. Ethiopia (X tons) held a little share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main exporting countries, was attained by Rwanda (with a CAGR of +4,664.5%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Kenya ($X), South Africa ($X) and Rwanda ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2022, with a combined 97% share of total exports.

Rwanda, with a CAGR of +2,970.5%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, among the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2022, which is down by -7.9% against the previous year. In general, the export price, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when the export price increased by 23% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices attained the maximum at $X per ton in 2021, and then declined in the following year.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Kenya ($X per ton), while Ethiopia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Kenya (+2.4%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

Imports in Africa

Bacon and ham imports dropped to X tons in 2022, falling by -7.6% against the year before. Overall, imports showed a pronounced reduction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 when imports increased by 27%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tons in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, bacon and ham imports dropped to $X in 2022. In general, imports showed a perceptible shrinkage. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 with an increase of 25% against the previous year. Angola was the major importing country with an import of around X tons, which amounted to 25% of total imports. Ghana (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total imports with an 8.4% share, followed by Gabon (6.8%), Mozambique (5.5%) and Seychelles (4.8%). Mayotte (X tons), Cabo Verde (X tons), Uganda (X tons), South Africa (X tons), Liberia (X tons), Sierra Leone (X tons), Namibia (X tons) and Nigeria (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to bacon and ham imports into Angola stood at -7.5%. At the same time, Seychelles (+18.2%), Gabon (+12.7%), Uganda (+11.7%), Mozambique (+8.9%), Cabo Verde (+7.9%), Mayotte (+3.6%), Sierra Leone (+2.9%) and Ghana (+1.4%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Seychelles emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Africa, with a CAGR of +18.2% from 2012-2022. Nigeria experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Namibia (-4.8%), South Africa (-6.2%) and Liberia (-9.3%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Gabon (+5.3 p.p.), Seychelles (+4.1 p.p.), Mozambique (+3.8 p.p.), Ghana (+3 p.p.), Uganda (+3 p.p.), Cabo Verde (+2.7 p.p.) and Mayotte (+2 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2022, the share of South Africa (-1.5 p.p.), Liberia (-3.3 p.p.) and Angola (-15.1 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, the largest bacon and ham importing markets in Africa were Angola ($X), Ghana ($X) and South Africa ($X), with a combined 37% share of total imports. Uganda, Seychelles, Gabon, Cabo Verde, Liberia, Mozambique, Mayotte, Nigeria, Sierra Leone and Namibia lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 36%.

Seychelles, with a CAGR of +19.4%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in Africa amounted to $X per ton, growing by 5.4% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when the import price increased by 8.5%. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per ton), while Mozambique ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
