In 2022, the African ball market increased by 11% to $X, rising for the sixth year in a row after four years of decline. In general, consumption, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, the market reached the peak level at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, consumption remained at a lower figure.
Ball Production in Africa
In value terms, ball production rose modestly to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Overall, production, however, saw a pronounced slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 20% against the previous year. The level of production peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, production failed to regain momentum.

In 2022, overseas shipments of balls increased by 21% to X units, rising for the second consecutive year after two years of decline. In general, exports, however, saw a perceptible downturn. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 when exports increased by 62%. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X units in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, ball exports soared to $X in 2022. Total exports indicated a temperate increase from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +3.6% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports increased by +120.6% against 2020 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2021 with an increase of 68%. The level of export peaked in 2022 and is likely to see steady growth in the near future.
Exports by Country
South Africa was the major exporting country with an export of around X units, which finished at 56% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Mauritius (X units), creating a 34% share of total exports. Egypt (X units) followed a long way behind the leaders.
From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Mauritius (with a CAGR of +34.9%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the exports figures.
In value terms, the largest ball supplying countries in Africa were South Africa ($X), Mauritius ($X) and Egypt ($X), together accounting for 90% of total exports.
In terms of the main exporting countries, Mauritius, with a CAGR of +53.5%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the exports figures.
Export Prices by Country
In 2022, the export price in Africa amounted to $X per unit, with an increase of 8.9% against the previous year. Export price indicated a buoyant increase from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +6.1% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, ball export price increased by +80.0% against 2012 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 an increase of 26% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices attained the maximum in 2022 and is likely to see steady growth in years to come.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Mauritius ($X per unit), while Egypt ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Mauritius (+13.8%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

Imports in Africa
In 2022, the amount of balls imported in Africa stood at X units, rising by 13% compared with 2021 figures. In general, imports saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 when imports increased by 18%. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X units in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
In value terms, ball imports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +2.4% over the period from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations being observed throughout the analyzed period. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
Imports by Country
South Africa represented the main importer of balls in Africa, with the volume of imports finishing at X units, which was near 37% of total imports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Morocco (X units), Ghana (X units) and Djibouti (X units), together creating a 16% share of total imports. Algeria (X units), Libya (X units), Nigeria (X units), Kenya (X units), Egypt (X units), Angola (X units), Guinea (X units), Cameroon (X units) and Cote d'Ivoire (X units) followed a long way behind the leaders.
From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to ball imports into South Africa stood at +3.0%. At the same time, Cameroon (+22.6%), Cote d'Ivoire (+19.9%), Ghana (+12.4%), Djibouti (+7.4%), Morocco (+2.3%) and Angola (+1.8%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Cameroon emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Africa, with a CAGR of +22.6% from 2012-2022. Nigeria experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Egypt (-2.1%), Guinea (-3.7%), Kenya (-4.8%), Libya (-6.3%) and Algeria (-9.1%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. South Africa (+6.9 p.p.), Ghana (+3.2 p.p.), Cameroon (+2.4 p.p.), Cote d'Ivoire (+2.2 p.p.) and Djibouti (+2.1 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Guinea, Kenya, Libya and Algeria saw its share reduced by -1.7%, -2.4%, -3.8% and -7.8% from 2012 to 2022, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, South Africa ($X), Morocco ($X) and Egypt ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, with a combined 49% share of total imports. Nigeria, Djibouti, Algeria, Angola, Ghana, Libya, Cameroon, Kenya, Cote d'Ivoire and Guinea lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 30%.
Cameroon, with a CAGR of +17.1%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
The import price in Africa stood at $X per unit in 2022, with an increase of 4.5% against the previous year. Over the last decade, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.5%. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 an increase of 22%. The level of import peaked at $X per unit in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Egypt ($X per unit), while Ghana ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
