As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons, and then contracted remarkably in the following year.

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2022, surging by 2.1% against the previous year. Export price indicated a mild increase from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +1.4% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, bambara bean export price increased by +77.5% against 2017 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 an increase of 38%. Swaziland (X tons) and Zimbabwe (X tons) held a minor share of total imports.

Imports into Democratic Republic of the Congo increased at an average annual rate of +47.4% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, South Africa (+71.7%) and Botswana (+20.9%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, South Africa emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Africa, with a CAGR of +71.7% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Swaziland (-5.2%) and Zimbabwe (-8.8%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Democratic Republic of the Congo (+53 p.p.), Botswana (+15 p.p.) and South Africa (+14 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2022, the share of Swaziland (-21.9 p.p.) and Zimbabwe (-24.8 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.

In value terms, Democratic Republic of the Congo ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported bambara beans in Africa, comprising 79% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by South Africa ($X), with a 6.4% share of total imports. It was followed by Swaziland, with a 4.7% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Democratic Republic of the Congo stood at +49.9%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: South Africa (+63.5% per year) and Swaziland (-11.9% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2022, declining by -4% against the previous year. Overall, the import price continues to indicate a pronounced shrinkage. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 an increase of 29% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.
