Banana Market Size in Africa
The African banana market declined slightly to $X in 2022, shrinking by -1.6% against the previous year. The market value increased at an average annual rate of +1.5% from 2012 to 2022; the trend pattern remained relatively stable, with somewhat noticeable fluctuations in certain years. Over the period under review, the market hit record highs at $X in 2021, and then shrank slightly in the following year.
Banana Production in Africa
In value terms, banana production reduced modestly to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. In general, production, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when the production volume increased by 27%. The level of production peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, production failed to regain momentum.
The countries with the highest volumes of production in 2022 were Angola (X tons), Tanzania (X tons) and Rwanda (X tons), with a combined 42% share of total production. Kenya, Egypt, Burundi, Cameroon, Sudan, Ethiopia, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Cote d'Ivoire, Mozambique and Uganda lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 43%.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of production, amongst the leading producing countries, was attained by Ethiopia (with a CAGR of +11.2%), while production for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
The average banana yield dropped modestly to X tons per ha in 2022, approximately mirroring 2021 figures. The yield figure increased at an average annual rate of +2.2% from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 13% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the banana yield reached the peak level at X tons per ha in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, the yield stood at a somewhat lower figure. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.
In 2022, the harvested area of bananas in Africa declined to X ha, which is down by -1.7% on 2021. Over the period under review, the harvested area, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when the harvested area increased by 6% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the harvested area dedicated to banana production attained the peak figure at X ha in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, the harvested area stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports in Africa
Banana exports shrank modestly to X tons in 2022, remaining stable against the previous year's figure. Over the period under review, exports, however, enjoyed a prominent expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 71%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons. From 2020 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, banana exports fell modestly to $X in 2022. Overall, exports, however, continue to indicate a prominent expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 when exports increased by 98% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2020 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
Exports by Country
Cote d'Ivoire represented the largest exporter of bananas in Africa, with the volume of exports accounting for X tons, which was near 51% of total exports in 2022. It was distantly followed by Cameroon (X tons), Mozambique (X tons) and Ghana (X tons), together making up a 44% share of total exports.
Exports from Cote d'Ivoire increased at an average annual rate of +10.0% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Mozambique (+93.5%) and Ghana (+7.5%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Mozambique emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Africa, with a CAGR of +93.5% from 2012-2022. Cameroon experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Mozambique and Cote d'Ivoire increased by +12 and +10 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Cote d'Ivoire ($X) remains the largest banana supplier in Africa, comprising 55% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Cameroon ($X), with a 27% share of total exports. It was followed by Ghana, with an 11% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in Cote d'Ivoire totaled +10.5%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Cameroon (+0.8% per year) and Ghana (+7.5% per year).
Export Prices by Country
The export price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2022, remaining constant against the previous year. Overall, the export price recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 when the export price increased by 16% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Cameroon ($X per ton), while Mozambique ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Mozambique (+7.3%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Banana Imports
Imports in Africa
Banana imports rose to X tons in 2022, picking up by 4.9% against 2021 figures. Overall, imports showed a prominent increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 when imports increased by 37%. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.
In value terms, banana imports declined to $X in 2022. Total imports indicated moderate growth from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +2.5% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports increased by +76.8% against 2018 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when imports increased by 42% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.
Imports by Country
Algeria (X tons) and South Africa (X tons) prevails in imports structure, together comprising 74% of total imports. Tunisia (X tons) held a 7.8% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Libya (7.5%). Morocco (X tons), Senegal (X tons) and Botswana (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for South Africa (with a CAGR of +55.2%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Algeria ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported bananas in Africa, comprising 45% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by South Africa ($X), with a 20% share of total imports. It was followed by Tunisia, with a 12% share.
In Algeria, banana imports declined by an average annual rate of -4.1% over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: South Africa (+45.7% per year) and Tunisia (+22.6% per year).
Import Prices by Country
The import price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2022, with a decrease of -5.4% against the previous year. In general, the import price recorded a drastic downturn. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 an increase of 4.4% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices reached the maximum at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Botswana ($X per ton), while South Africa ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Tunisia (+3.5%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the import price figures.
