In value terms, banana and plantain production fell to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. The total output value increased at an average annual rate of +2.9% over the period from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 when the production volume increased by 22%. As a result, production reached the peak level of $X. From 2017 to 2022, production growth remained at a somewhat lower figure.
The countries with the highest volumes of production in 2022 were Uganda (X tons), Cameroon (X tons) and Democratic Republic of the Congo (X tons), with a combined 39% share of total production.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of production, amongst the main producing countries, was attained by Uganda (with a CAGR of +7.7%), while production for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
The average banana and plantain yield dropped modestly to X tons per ha in 2022, declining by -3% compared with the previous year's figure. Over the period under review, the yield, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 with an increase of 6.9%. As a result, the yield attained the peak level of X tons per ha. From 2019 to 2022, the growth of the banana and plantain yield remained at a somewhat lower figure. Despite the increased use of modern agricultural techniques and methods, future yield figures may still be impacted by adverse weather conditions.

The level of harvested area peaked at X ha in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, the harvested area remained at a lower figure.

Banana and plantain exports dropped to X tons in 2022, almost unchanged from the previous year. Total exports indicated slight growth from 2012 to 2022: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.0% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, exports decreased by -4.7% against 2019 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when exports increased by 55% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of X tons. From 2020 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, banana and plantain exports declined to $X in 2022. In general, exports, however, saw a tangible expansion. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 77% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. From 2020 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
Exports by Country
Cote d'Ivoire was the major exporting country with an export of about X tons, which recorded 47% of total exports. Cameroon (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total exports with a 25% share, followed by Mozambique (11%) and Ghana (8.1%). The following exporters - Ethiopia (X tons) and South Africa (X tons) - each finished at a 3.8% share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the main exporting countries, was attained by Ethiopia (with a CAGR of +77.9%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Cote d'Ivoire ($X), Cameroon ($X) and Ghana ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2022, together accounting for 90% of total exports. Mozambique, South Africa and Ethiopia lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 5.9%.
Ethiopia, with a CAGR of +57.4%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, in terms of the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
The export price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2022, shrinking by -6.5% against the previous year. Over the last decade, it increased at an average annual rate of +1.2%. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 when the export price increased by 14%. Over the period under review, the export prices reached the maximum at $X per ton in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, the export prices remained at a lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Cote d'Ivoire ($X per ton), while Ethiopia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Cote d'Ivoire (+3.1%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

Imports in Africa
In 2022, overseas purchases of bananas and plantains increased by 5.5% to X tons, rising for the fifth consecutive year after two years of decline. In general, imports recorded a strong expansion. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 when imports increased by 53%. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum in 2022 and are likely to see steady growth in the near future.
In value terms, banana and plantain imports declined to $X in 2022. Overall, imports showed a buoyant increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2019 with an increase of 48%. The level of import peaked at $X in 2021, and then contracted in the following year.
Imports by Country
Algeria (X tons) and South Africa (X tons) represented the key importers of bananas and plantains in 2022, resulting at near 33% and 30% of total imports, respectively. Libya (X tons) took the next position in the ranking, followed by Tunisia (X tons) and Senegal (X tons). All these countries together took approx. 22% share of total imports. Morocco (X tons) and Botswana (X tons) took a relatively small share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Libya (with a CAGR of +23.9%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Algeria ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported bananas and plantains in Africa, comprising 39% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by South Africa ($X), with a 19% share of total imports. It was followed by Libya, with a 12% share.
In Algeria, banana and plantain imports expanded at an average annual rate of +8.7% over the period from 2012-2022. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: South Africa (+12.0% per year) and Libya (+20.1% per year).
Import Prices by Country
In 2022, the import price in Africa amounted to $X per ton, shrinking by -5.3% against the previous year. Overall, the import price showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 an increase of 26% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
