Baryte Market Size in Africa
The African baryte market fell dramatically to $X in 2021, with a decrease of -63.8% against the previous year. In general, consumption continues to indicate a abrupt downturn. Over the period under review, the market hit record highs at $X in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In 2021, exports of barytes in Africa surged to X tons, growing by 134% compared with the previous year's figure. In general, exports continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, baryte exports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. Overall, exports, however, saw a slight setback. The level of export peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.
Exports by Country
The shipments of the one major exporters of barytes, namely Morocco, represented more than two-thirds of total export.
Morocco experienced a relatively flat trend pattern with regard to volume of exports of barytes. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Morocco increased by +2.9 percentage points, while the shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Morocco ($X) also remains the largest baryte supplier in Africa.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in Morocco was relatively modest.
Export Prices by Country
The export price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2021, declining by -13.2% against the previous year. Overall, the export price showed a slight reduction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 when the export price increased by 11%. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.
As there is only one major export destination, the average price level is determined by prices for Morocco.
From 2012 to 2021, the rate of growth in terms of prices for Morocco amounted to -1.5% per year.
Baryte Imports
Imports in Africa
In 2021, supplies from abroad of barytes decreased by -13.1% to X tons, falling for the third year in a row after two years of growth. Overall, imports recorded a deep downturn. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 when imports increased by 28% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2019 to 2021, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, baryte imports contracted rapidly to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports saw a deep setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 when imports increased by 11%. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X. From 2016 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.
Imports by Country
Algeria represented the largest importer of barytes in Africa, with the volume of imports resulting at X tons, which was near 34% of total imports in 2021. Tunisia (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total imports with a 15% share, followed by Cameroon (8.2%), Gabon (5.3%) and Angola (4.9%). The following importers - Egypt (X tons), Chad (X tons), Ghana (X tons), Cote d'Ivoire (X tons), Morocco (X tons), South Africa (X tons), Congo (X tons) and Sudan (X tons) - together made up 24% of total imports.
Imports into Algeria decreased at an average annual rate of -7.6% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Cote d'Ivoire (+48.8%), Morocco (+8.0%), Gabon (+2.0%) and South Africa (+1.7%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Cote d'Ivoire emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Africa, with a CAGR of +48.8% from 2012-2021. Congo, Chad and Cameroon experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Tunisia (-4.1%), Egypt (-10.5%), Sudan (-12.3%), Ghana (-14.7%) and Angola (-15.9%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Tunisia (+4.5 p.p.), Cameroon (+4 p.p.), Gabon (+3.2 p.p.), Cote d'Ivoire (+2.9 p.p.), Morocco (+2.2 p.p.), Chad (+1.9 p.p.) and South Africa (+1.6 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2021, the share of Ghana (-3.5 p.p.) and Angola (-6.2 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, Algeria ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported barytes in Africa, comprising 20% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Egypt ($X), with a 9.3% share of total imports. It was followed by Morocco, with an 8.3% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in Algeria amounted to -9.3%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Egypt (-8.2% per year) and Morocco (+7.5% per year).
Import Prices by Country
In 2021, the import price in Africa amounted to $X per ton, waning by -29.3% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price recorded a pronounced setback. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when the import price increased by 40% against the previous year. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per ton, and then reduced notably in the following year.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Morocco ($X per ton), while Tunisia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Congo (+6.7%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
