The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, production decreased by -4.8% against 2018 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 when the production volume increased by 17% against the previous year. As a result, production attained the peak level of $X. From 2019 to 2021, production growth remained at a lower figure.

In 2021, overseas shipments of base metal closures, stoppers, caps and lids were finally on the rise to reach X tons for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year declining trend. The total export volume increased at an average annual rate of +2.9% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 when exports increased by 29% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, base metal closure exports soared to $X in 2021. Total exports indicated a measured expansion from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +3.0% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. As a result, the exports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
Exports by Country
South Africa dominates exports structure, accounting for X tons, which was approx. 79% of total exports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Nigeria (X tons) and Tanzania (X tons), together creating an 11% share of total exports. Egypt (X tons), Morocco (X tons) and Kenya (X tons) held a minor share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to base metal closure exports from South Africa stood at +3.7%. At the same time, Tanzania (+40.8%) and Nigeria (+24.9%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Tanzania emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Africa, with a CAGR of +40.8% from 2012-2021. Kenya experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Egypt (-4.4%) and Morocco (-12.4%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of South Africa, Nigeria and Tanzania increased by +5.2, +5.2 and +4.6 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest base metal closure supplier in Africa, comprising 84% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Egypt ($X), with a 6.4% share of total exports. It was followed by Morocco, with a 3.3% share.
In South Africa, base metal closure exports expanded at an average annual rate of +4.7% over the period from 2012-2021. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Egypt (+1.3% per year) and Morocco (-9.1% per year).
Export Prices by Country
In 2021, the export price in Africa amounted to $X per ton, jumping by 62% against the previous year. In general, the export price recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. As a result, the export price reached the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
Prices varied noticeably country of origin: the country with the highest price was Morocco ($X per ton), while Nigeria ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Egypt (+6.0%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in Africa
In 2021, imports of base metal closures, stoppers, caps and lids in Africa expanded rapidly to X tons, increasing by 11% against 2020 figures. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +4.8% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 17% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked in 2021 and is likely to see steady growth in the immediate term.
In value terms, base metal closure imports surged to $X in 2021. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +4.2% over the period from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
Imports by Country
The purchases of the eight major importers of base metal closures, stoppers, caps and lids, namely Morocco, South Africa, Egypt, Tunisia, Nigeria, Ghana, Algeria and Seychelles, represented more than two-thirds of total import. Mauritius (X tons), Cote d'Ivoire (X tons), Kenya (X tons) and Angola (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.
From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Cote d'Ivoire (with a CAGR of +24.1%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest base metal closure importing markets in Africa were Morocco ($X), Egypt ($X) and South Africa ($X), together comprising 49% of total imports. Nigeria, Tunisia, Algeria, Ghana, Seychelles, Mauritius, Cote d'Ivoire, Kenya and Angola lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 40%.
Cote d'Ivoire, with a CAGR of +21.1%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
The import price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2021, with an increase of 7.4% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, import prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, import prices failed to regain momentum.
Prices varied noticeably country of destination: the country with the highest price was Egypt ($X per ton), while Seychelles ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Morocco (+1.6%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
