Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2022, imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports into South Africa decreased at an average annual rate of -5.0% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Zimbabwe (+42.9%), Tunisia (+15.8%), Algeria (+7.2%), Kenya (+6.7%), Uganda (+5.1%), Namibia (+5.1%), Sudan (+3.2%) and Tanzania (+3.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Zimbabwe emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Africa, with a CAGR of +42.9% from 2012-2022. Morocco and Ethiopia experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Egypt (-5.2%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Zimbabwe (+7 p.p.), Tunisia (+6.4 p.p.), Kenya (+5.2 p.p.) and Algeria (+3.2 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2022, the share of Egypt (-7.5 p.p.) and South Africa (-16 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, South Africa ($X), Egypt ($X) and Kenya ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2022, together accounting for 64% of total imports. Tunisia, Algeria, Morocco, Namibia, Zimbabwe, Ethiopia, Sudan, Uganda and Tanzania lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 30%.

Zimbabwe, with a CAGR of +23.7%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2022, remaining stable against the previous year. In general, the import price showed a mild decline. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 an increase of 18%. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Morocco ($X per ton), while Tanzania ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Kenya (+3.0%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
