Tunisia was also the fastest-growing in terms of the base metal flexible tubing, iron or steel exports, with a CAGR of +4.8% from 2012 to 2021. Egypt (-6.2%) and South Africa (-8.7%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Tunisia increased by +14 percentage points.

In 2021, supplies from abroad of base metal flexible tubing, iron or steel decreased by -4.6% to X tons, falling for the fourth consecutive year after three years of growth. Over the period under review, imports recorded a drastic downturn. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2017 with an increase of 127% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2018 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

Morocco represented the largest importing country with an import of around X tons, which reached 33% of total imports. Egypt (X tons) held a 14% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Libya (9.8%), Algeria (8.6%) and Nigeria (4.6%). Cote d'Ivoire (X tons), Mozambique (X tons), Ghana (X tons), Democratic Republic of the Congo (X tons), Senegal (X tons), Kenya (X tons) and Rwanda (X tons) took a minor share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to base metal flexible tubing imports into Morocco stood at +6.2%. At the same time, Mozambique (+25.1%), Cote d'Ivoire (+14.7%), Democratic Republic of the Congo (+12.9%), Senegal (+7.8%) and Rwanda (+1.7%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Mozambique emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Africa, with a CAGR of +25.1% from 2012-2021. Libya experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Ghana (-1.5%), Nigeria (-7.3%), Egypt (-7.6%), Kenya (-9.6%) and Algeria (-17.4%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Morocco (+21 p.p.), Libya (+3.3 p.p.), Cote d'Ivoire (+2.6 p.p.) and Mozambique (+2.5 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Egypt and Algeria saw its share reduced by -3.2% and -20.4% from 2012 to 2021, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, the largest base metal flexible tubing importing markets in Africa were Egypt ($X), Morocco ($X) and Algeria ($X), with a combined 52% share of total imports. These countries were followed by Libya, Nigeria, Cote d'Ivoire, Ghana, Mozambique, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Senegal, Rwanda and Kenya, which together accounted for a further 27%.

In terms of the main importing countries, Mozambique, with a CAGR of +20.8%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The import price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2021, rising by 6.7% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when the import price increased by 35% against the previous year. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2018 to 2021, the import prices remained at a lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Nigeria ($X per ton), while Kenya ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
