Base Metal Hook Market Size in Africa

For the third year in a row, the African base metal hook market recorded decline in sales value, which decreased by -7.7% to $X in 2022. In general, consumption, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, consumption remained at a lower figure.

Base Metal Hook Production in Africa

In value terms, base metal hook production expanded slightly to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. The total production indicated pronounced growth from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +3.4% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, production increased by +8.5% against 2019 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 when the production volume increased by 32% against the previous year. Over the period under review, production reached the maximum level at $X in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2022, production remained at a lower figure.

Exports in Africa

In 2022, base metal hook exports in Africa surged to X tons, with an increase of 48% compared with the year before. Overall, exports, however, saw a pronounced curtailment. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 when exports increased by 60%. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, base metal hook exports surged to $X in 2022. In general, exports, however, showed a noticeable curtailment. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

South Africa represented the main exporting country with an export of around X tons, which resulted at 64% of total exports. Tunisia (X tons) held a 17% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by Rwanda (9%). The following exporters - Egypt (X tons) and Namibia (X tons) - together made up 5.9% of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to base metal hook exports from South Africa stood at +3.2%. At the same time, Rwanda (+60.4%), Tunisia (+27.5%) and Namibia (+26.5%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Rwanda emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Africa, with a CAGR of +60.4% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Egypt (-25.5%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. South Africa (+28 p.p.), Tunisia (+16 p.p.), Rwanda (+9 p.p.) and Namibia (+1.8 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Egypt saw its share reduced by -53.8% from 2012 to 2022, respectively.

In value terms, Tunisia ($X), South Africa ($X) and Namibia ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2022, with a combined 83% share of total exports. Egypt and Rwanda lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 0.9%.

Rwanda, with a CAGR of +101.2%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of exports, in terms of the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2022, increasing by 2.2% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 an increase of 50%. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton. From 2014 to 2022, the export prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Tunisia ($X per ton), while Rwanda ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Rwanda (+25.7%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in Africa

In 2022, purchases abroad of base metal hooks, eyes and eyelets decreased by -39.1% to X tons, falling for the second year in a row after four years of growth. In general, imports showed a abrupt descent. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 when imports increased by 101% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, base metal hook imports declined to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports recorded a perceptible descent. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 with an increase of 40%. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X. From 2014 to 2022, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

Nigeria (X tons) and South Africa (X tons) represented roughly 46% of total imports in 2022. Tunisia (X tons) ranks next in terms of the total imports with a 6.3% share, followed by Algeria (4.9%). The following importers - Kenya (X tons), Ghana (X tons), Morocco (X tons), Senegal (X tons), Djibouti (X tons), Tanzania (X tons), Egypt (X tons), Cote d'Ivoire (X tons) and Ethiopia (X tons) - together made up 27% of total imports.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the leading importing countries, was attained by Senegal (with a CAGR of +17.0%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest base metal hook importing markets in Africa were Tunisia ($X), Morocco ($X) and South Africa ($X), together comprising 48% of total imports. Algeria, Nigeria, Egypt, Ghana, Djibouti, Senegal, Kenya, Ethiopia, Tanzania and Cote d'Ivoire lagged somewhat behind, together comprising a further 33%.

Senegal, with a CAGR of +18.4%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in Africa amounted to $X per ton, increasing by 43% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price enjoyed a resilient expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 an increase of 64%. The level of import peaked in 2022 and is likely to see gradual growth in years to come.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Morocco ($X per ton), while Nigeria ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Djibouti (+8.2%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
