Morocco (X tons), Zambia (X tons), Ethiopia (X tons), Guinea (X tons), Namibia (X tons), Botswana (X tons), Cameroon (X tons) and Mozambique (X tons) took a relatively small share of total imports.

While the share of Algeria (+5.5 p.p.), Democratic Republic of the Congo (+5.3 p.p.), Egypt (+3.7 p.p.), Kenya (+3.7 p.p.), Guinea (+2.5 p.p.), Ethiopia (+1.9 p.p.) and Cameroon (+1.6 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2021, the share of South Africa (-6.5 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, South Africa ($X), Egypt ($X) and Algeria ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, together comprising 43% of total imports. These countries were followed by Democratic Republic of the Congo, Morocco, Kenya, Cameroon, Namibia, Mozambique, Zambia, Ethiopia, Guinea and Botswana, which together accounted for a further 30%.

Cameroon, with a CAGR of +23.9%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2021, surging by 33% against the previous year. Over the period from 2012 to 2021, it increased at an average annual rate of +2.7%. As a result, import price reached the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Prices varied noticeably country of destination: the country with the highest price was Egypt ($X per ton), while South Africa ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Egypt (+6.2%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
