In 2021, after two years of growth, there was significant decline in the African base station market, when its value decreased by -9% to $X. In general, consumption recorded a deep downturn. Over the period under review, the market attained the peak level at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, consumption failed to regain momentum.

Base Station Production in Africa

In value terms, base station production totaled $X in 2021 estimated in export price. The total output value increased at an average annual rate of +2.1% over the period from 2012 to 2021; the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 with an increase of 17%. As a result, production attained the peak level of $X. From 2020 to 2021, production growth remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In 2021, shipments abroad of base stations decreased by -3.2% to X tons, falling for the second year in a row after two years of growth. Over the period under review, exports continue to indicate a deep reduction. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when exports increased by 145%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, base station exports dropped slightly to $X in 2021. In general, exports saw a abrupt curtailment. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 with an increase of 124%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the peak figure at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

In 2021, Seychelles (X tons) was the major exporter of base stations, generating 47% of total exports. Swaziland (X tons) took an 18% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by Egypt (6.6%), Kenya (5.7%) and Benin (4.6%). The following exporters - South Africa (X kg), Congo (X kg) and Tunisia (X kg) - together made up 7% of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to base station exports from Seychelles stood at +9.1%. At the same time, Congo (+39.4%), Swaziland (+38.1%), Benin (+24.2%) and Egypt (+23.6%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Congo emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Africa, with a CAGR of +39.4% from 2012-2021. Kenya experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Tunisia (-7.0%) and South Africa (-27.9%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Seychelles (+36 p.p.), Swaziland (+18 p.p.), Egypt (+6.1 p.p.), Benin (+4.2 p.p.), Kenya (+2.6 p.p.) and Congo (+1.7 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2021, the share of South Africa (-29.3 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest base station supplier in Africa, comprising 41% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Seychelles ($X), with a 17% share of total exports. It was followed by Swaziland, with a 13% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in South Africa stood at -16.9%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Seychelles (-9.1% per year) and Swaziland (+24.7% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in Africa amounted to $X per ton, stabilizing at the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, showed a abrupt curtailment. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 an increase of 24% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per ton), while Benin ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by South Africa (+15.2%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in Africa

In 2021, after two years of growth, there was decline in purchases abroad of base stations, when their volume decreased by -4.6% to X tons. Over the period under review, imports showed a deep downturn. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 with an increase of 18% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, base station imports contracted significantly to $X in 2021. In general, imports saw a abrupt setback. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2019 with an increase of 12% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports hit record highs at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2021, Ghana (X tons), distantly followed by Nigeria (X tons), Algeria (X tons), Kenya (X tons) and Uganda (X tons) were the main importers of base stations, together creating 53% of total imports. The following importers - Libya (X tons), Sudan (X tons), Ethiopia (X tons), South Africa (X tons), Cote d'Ivoire (X tons), Burundi (X tons), Tunisia (X tons) and Namibia (X tons) - together made up 23% of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the leading importing countries, was attained by Namibia (with a CAGR of +34.4%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest base station importing markets in Africa were Ghana ($X), Algeria ($X) and South Africa ($X), with a combined 28% share of total imports. Ethiopia, Uganda, Nigeria, Libya, Kenya, Sudan, Burundi, Cote d'Ivoire, Tunisia and Namibia lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 37%.

Burundi, with a CAGR of +25.2%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2021, shrinking by -12.5% against the previous year. Overall, the import price recorded a perceptible decline. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 an increase of 26%. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2017 to 2021, the import prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably country of destination: the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per ton), while Namibia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
