In 2021, the African metal bath market was finally on the rise to reach $X for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year declining trend. Over the period under review, consumption, however, saw a abrupt setback. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, consumption failed to regain momentum.

In 2021, exports of baths of iron or steel in Africa shrank to X tons, with a decrease of -6% against the previous year's figure. In general, exports showed a abrupt curtailment. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 when exports increased by 19% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports hit record highs at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, metal bath exports reduced to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports showed a deep downturn. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 with an increase of 22% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Exports by Country
South Africa was the major exporter of baths of iron or steel in Africa, with the volume of exports recording X tons, which was approx. 59% of total exports in 2021. Tunisia (X tons) held the second position in the ranking, distantly followed by Rwanda (X tons). All these countries together held near 30% share of total exports. Egypt (X tons) and Kenya (X tons) took a minor share of total exports.
Exports from South Africa decreased at an average annual rate of -2.0% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Kenya (+27.8%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Kenya emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Africa, with a CAGR of +27.8% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Egypt (-13.7%), Rwanda (-16.7%) and Tunisia (-24.3%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of South Africa (+42 p.p.), Rwanda (+7.1 p.p.) and Kenya (+1.7 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2021, the share of Tunisia (-44.6 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest metal bath supplier in Africa, comprising 73% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Tunisia ($X), with an 11% share of total exports. It was followed by Rwanda, with a 3.2% share.
In South Africa, metal bath exports plunged by an average annual rate of -3.9% over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Tunisia (-22.6% per year) and Rwanda (+29.7% per year).
Export Prices by Country
The export price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2021, waning by -5.1% against the previous year. Export price indicated a strong increase from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +5.2% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, metal bath export price increased by +37.5% against 2019 indices. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2020 an increase of 45%. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton, and then declined in the following year.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per ton), while Kenya ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Rwanda (+55.7%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, metal bath imports rose sharply to $X in 2021. In general, imports, however, continue to indicate a abrupt decrease. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 with an increase of 26%. The level of import peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.
Imports by Country
In 2021, Algeria (X tons), Nigeria (X tons), Ethiopia (X tons), South Africa (X tons) and Tanzania (X tons) represented the largest importer of baths of iron or steel in Africa, achieving 55% of total import. Mozambique (X tons) took a 5.3% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Botswana (4.6%). Angola (X tons), Kenya (X tons), Libya (X tons), Mayotte (X tons) and Egypt (X tons) took a little share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Mayotte (with a CAGR of +18.5%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, the largest metal bath importing markets in Africa were Algeria ($X), Ethiopia ($X) and South Africa ($X), together comprising 30% of total imports. These countries were followed by Nigeria, Mayotte, Mozambique, Libya, Kenya, Botswana, Angola, Tanzania and Egypt, which together accounted for a further 39%.
Mayotte, with a CAGR of +19.3%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
In 2021, the import price in Africa amounted to $X per ton, stabilizing at the previous year. Over the last nine years, it increased at an average annual rate of +3.8%. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 an increase of 23%. Over the period under review, import prices reached the peak figure in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in the immediate term.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Mayotte ($X per ton), while Tanzania ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Mozambique (+18.1%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
