Exports from South Africa decreased at an average annual rate of -2.0% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Kenya (+27.8%) displayed positive paces of growth. By contrast, Egypt (-13.7%), Rwanda (-16.7%) and Tunisia (-24.3%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of South Africa (+42 p.p.), Rwanda (+7.1 p.p.) and Kenya (+1.7 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2021, the share of Tunisia (-44.6 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest metal bath supplier in Africa, comprising 73% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Tunisia ($X), with an 11% share of total exports. It was followed by Rwanda, with a 3.2% share.

In South Africa, metal bath exports plunged by an average annual rate of -3.9% over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Tunisia (-22.6% per year) and Rwanda (+29.7% per year).

In 2021, Algeria (X tons), Nigeria (X tons), Ethiopia (X tons), South Africa (X tons) and Tanzania (X tons) represented the largest importer of baths of iron or steel in Africa, achieving 55% of total import. Mozambique (X tons) took a 5.3% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Botswana (4.6%). Angola (X tons), Kenya (X tons), Libya (X tons), Mayotte (X tons) and Egypt (X tons) took a little share of total imports.
