In 2021, the amount of fish fillets in batter or breadcrumbs exported in Africa was estimated at X tons, increasing by 13% on 2020. Overall, exports saw a remarkable increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 when exports increased by 77% against the previous year. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, battered fish fillet exports reduced to $X in 2021. In general, exports enjoyed buoyant growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 when exports increased by 110%. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

Morocco was the largest exporting country with an export of around X tons, which finished at 78% of total exports. It was distantly followed by South Africa (X tons), committing a 21% share of total exports.

Morocco was also the fastest-growing in terms of the fish fillets in batter or breadcrumbs exports, with a CAGR of +23.2% from 2012 to 2021. South Africa (-6.1%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Morocco increased by +54 percentage points.

In value terms, Morocco ($X) remains the largest battered fish fillet supplier in Africa, comprising 77% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by South Africa ($X), with a 21% share of total exports.

In 2021, the export price in Africa amounted to $X per ton, reducing by -14.5% against the previous year. Overall, the export price recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 an increase of 19%. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2018 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

Average prices varied noticeably amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per ton), while Morocco totaled $X per ton.

For the eighth consecutive year, Africa recorded growth in supplies from abroad of fish fillets in batter or breadcrumbs, which increased by 14% to X tons in 2021. In general, imports continue to indicate a resilient increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 55% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked in 2021 and is likely to see gradual growth in the near future.

In value terms, battered fish fillet imports expanded significantly to $X in 2021. Overall, imports continue to indicate a strong increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2018 when imports increased by 43%. The level of import peaked in 2021 and is likely to continue growth in years to come.

Imports by Country

In 2021, Cote d'Ivoire (X tons) was the major importer of fish fillets in batter or breadcrumbs, making up 45% of total imports. Kenya (X tons) held a 12% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Ghana (11%), Mali (10%) and Democratic Republic of the Congo (4.6%). Nigeria (X tons) and Gabon (X tons) took a relatively small share of total imports.

Imports into Cote d'Ivoire increased at an average annual rate of +39.2% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Mali (+95.1%), Kenya (+59.0%), Nigeria (+36.2%), Ghana (+17.0%), Democratic Republic of the Congo (+12.7%) and Gabon (+9.7%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Mali emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Africa, with a CAGR of +95.1% from 2012-2021. While the share of Cote d'Ivoire (+35 p.p.), Kenya (+11 p.p.), Mali (+10 p.p.) and Nigeria (+2.9 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2021, the share of Democratic Republic of the Congo (-2.1 p.p.) and Gabon (-2.2 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Cote d'Ivoire ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported fish fillets in batter or breadcrumbs in Africa, comprising 38% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Kenya ($X), with a 16% share of total imports. It was followed by Mali, with a 12% share.

In Cote d'Ivoire, battered fish fillet imports expanded at an average annual rate of +39.5% over the period from 2012-2021. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Kenya (+60.3% per year) and Mali (+101.0% per year).

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2021, waning by -6.6% against the previous year. Overall, the import price, however, showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 an increase of 21% against the previous year. There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Kenya ($X per ton), while Ghana ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Mali (+3.0%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
