Beryl Market Size in Africa

In 2021, the African beryl market was finally on the rise to reach $X after three years of decline. The market value increased at an average annual rate of +4.4% over the period from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, consumption failed to regain momentum.

The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when exports increased by 20,309% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons, and then contracted significantly in the following year.

In value terms, beryl exports shrank notably to $X in 2021. Overall, exports, however, showed strong growth. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2016 when exports increased by 947% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2017 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

Angola prevails in exports structure, amounting to X tons, which was near 90% of total exports in 2021. It was distantly followed by South Africa (X kg), achieving a 10% share of total exports.

Angola was also the fastest-growing in terms of the beryl exports, with a CAGR of +338.0% from 2012 to 2021. South Africa (-5.0%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Angola increased by +90 percentage points.

In value terms, Angola ($X) emerged as the largest beryl supplier in Africa, comprising 26% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by South Africa ($X), with a 5.2% share of total exports.

In 2021, the export price in Africa amounted to $X per ton, picking up by 2,386% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price, however, showed a deep downturn. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per ton), while Angola stood at $X per ton.

In 2021, overseas purchases of beryl were finally on the rise to reach X kg for the first time since 2013, thus ending a seven-year declining trend. Over the period under review, imports, however, faced a dramatic contraction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 772% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons. From 2014 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, beryl imports soared to $X in 2021. In general, imports, however, recorded a deep contraction. The level of import peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

Congo (X kg) and Namibia (X kg) were the key importers of beryl in 2021, resulting at near 38% and 38% of total imports, respectively. It was distantly followed by South Africa (X kg), making up a 23% share of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main importing countries, was attained by Namibia (with a CAGR of +45.3%), while imports for the other leaders experienced a decline in the imports figures.

In value terms, Congo ($X), Namibia ($X) and South Africa ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, together accounting for 99% of total imports.

In terms of the main importing countries, Namibia, with a CAGR of +51.8%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced a decline in the imports figures.

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the import price in Africa amounted to $X per ton, growing by 22% against the previous year. In general, the import price enjoyed a temperate increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 an increase of 757% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices reached the peak figure in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in years to come.

Average prices varied noticeably amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per ton), while Namibia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Namibia (+4.5%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
