Binocular Market Size in Africa

The African binocular market declined slightly to $X in 2021, waning by -3.9% against the previous year. The total consumption indicated strong growth from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +5.7% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, consumption decreased by -8.2% against 2018 indices. The level of consumption peaked at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, consumption stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, binocular production amounted to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. The total production indicated a buoyant expansion from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +8.2% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, production decreased by -4.2% against 2018 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 with an increase of 35%. Over the period under review, production hit record highs at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, production failed to regain momentum.

Exports in Africa

After two years of decline, overseas shipments of binoculars increased by 98% to X units in 2021. Over the period under review, exports enjoyed a modest increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 with an increase of 164%. The volume of export peaked at X units in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, binocular exports soared to $X in 2021. Overall, exports, however, recorded a abrupt decrease. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 with an increase of 81%. The level of export peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

Mauritius (X units) and South Africa (X units) dominates exports structure, together making up 91% of total exports. The following exporters - Algeria (X units) and Tunisia (X units) - together made up 5.6% of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Mauritius (with a CAGR of +26.4%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest binocular supplier in Africa, comprising 53% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Mauritius ($X), with a 12% share of total exports. It was followed by Algeria, with a 9.2% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in South Africa totaled +4.0%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Mauritius (+16.8% per year) and Algeria (+0.8% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in Africa amounted to $X per unit, with a decrease of -33.7% against the previous year. In general, the export price faced a deep downturn. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 when the export price increased by 108%. As a result, the export price reached the peak level of $X per unit. From 2016 to 2021, the export prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Algeria ($X per unit), while Tunisia ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Tunisia (+12.1%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

Imports in Africa

Binocular imports shrank slightly to X units in 2021, reducing by -3.3% compared with 2020. In general, imports, however, recorded a moderate increase. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 with an increase of 424% against the previous year. As a result, imports reached the peak of X units. From 2019 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, binocular imports fell significantly to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports, however, continue to indicate a resilient increase. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 with an increase of 102%. Over the period under review, imports reached the peak figure at $X in 2020, and then declined notably in the following year.

Imports by Country

South Africa (X units) and Botswana (X units) represented the major importers of binoculars in 2021, finishing at near 37% and 26% of total imports, respectively. Algeria (X units) took a 13% share (based on physical terms) of total imports, which put it in second place, followed by Cote d'Ivoire (5.4%). The following importers - Mozambique (X units), Morocco (X units) and Mauritius (X units) - together made up 9.1% of total imports.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Mozambique (with a CAGR of +64.3%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest binocular importing markets in Africa were Algeria ($X), South Africa ($X) and Morocco ($X), together accounting for 77% of total imports. These countries were followed by Mozambique, Mauritius, Botswana and Cote d'Ivoire, which together accounted for a further 2.8%.

Among the main importing countries, Mozambique, with a CAGR of +35.6%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the import price in Africa amounted to $X per unit, shrinking by -43.1% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, recorded a noticeable increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 an increase of 304% against the previous year. Over the period under review, import prices reached the maximum at $X per unit in 2020, and then fell remarkably in the following year.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Algeria ($X per unit), while Botswana ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Morocco (+5.5%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the import price figures.
