In 2021, the African biodiesel market decreased by -43.2% to $X, falling for the second year in a row after four years of growth. Over the period under review, consumption showed a pronounced contraction. As a result, consumption attained the peak level of $X. From 2020 to 2021, the growth of the market remained at a lower figure.
Biodiesel Production in Africa
In value terms, biodiesel production fell to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. The total production indicated a tangible increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +4.9% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, production increased by +54.1% against 2012 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 23% against the previous year. As a result, production attained the peak level of $X, and then dropped in the following year.

In 2021, shipments abroad of biodiesel increased by 96% to X tons, rising for the second consecutive year after two years of decline. In general, exports recorded a significant expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when exports increased by 339%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum in 2021 and are expected to retain growth in the near future.
In value terms, biodiesel exports surged to $X in 2021. Overall, exports showed a significant increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when exports increased by 472% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum in 2021 and are likely to see gradual growth in years to come.
Exports by Country
In 2021, Egypt (X tons) was the largest exporter of biodiesel, generating 67% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Tunisia (X tons), creating a 30% share of total exports. Morocco (X tons) held a relatively small share of total exports.
Egypt was also the fastest-growing in terms of the biodiesel exports, with a CAGR of +69.3% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Tunisia (+23.2%) and Morocco (+20.6%) displayed positive paces of growth. Egypt (+67 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Morocco and Tunisia saw its share reduced by -5.6% and -56.3% from 2012 to 2021, respectively.
In value terms, Egypt ($X) emerged as the largest biodiesel supplier in Africa, comprising 70% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Tunisia ($X), with a 28% share of total exports.
In Egypt, biodiesel exports increased at an average annual rate of +85.8% over the period from 2012-2021. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Tunisia (+25.7% per year) and Morocco (+14.1% per year).
Export Prices by Country
The export price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2021, growing by 19% against the previous year. Export price indicated a noticeable increase from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +2.4% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, biodiesel export price increased by +76.7% against 2018 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 when the export price increased by 30% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices hit record highs in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Egypt ($X per ton), while Morocco ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Egypt (+9.8%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.
Biodiesel Imports
Imports in Africa
Biodiesel imports dropped sharply to X tons in 2021, shrinking by -23.5% compared with 2020 figures. In general, imports showed a pronounced curtailment. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 with an increase of 75% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at X tons in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, imports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, biodiesel imports soared to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports continue to indicate a perceptible slump. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 when imports increased by 41%. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X. From 2017 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a somewhat lower figure.
Imports by Country
The countries with the highest levels of biodiesel imports in 2021 were Cote d'Ivoire (X tons), Nigeria (X tons), Congo (X tons) and Ethiopia (X tons), together reaching 49% of total import. South Africa (X tons) held the next position in the ranking, followed by Tanzania (X tons) and Benin (X tons). All these countries together took near 20% share of total imports. The following importers - Lesotho (X tons), Ghana (X tons), Namibia (X tons), Algeria (X tons), Angola (X tons) and Cameroon (X tons) - together made up 18% of total imports.
From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Nigeria (with a CAGR of +67.5%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Ethiopia ($X), Nigeria ($X) and Congo ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, with a combined 39% share of total imports.
Among the main importing countries, Nigeria, with a CAGR of +70.0%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
In 2021, the import price in Africa amounted to $X per ton, with an increase of 70% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. As a result, import price reached the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Angola ($X per ton), while Lesotho ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Ethiopia (+15.2%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
