The African bismuth market surged to $X in 2021, rising by 108% against the previous year. Over the period under review, consumption showed buoyant growth. As a result, consumption reached the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, bismuth production shrank to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. In general, production, however, posted prominent growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 with an increase of 45% against the previous year. The level of production peaked at $X in 2020, and then fell in the following year.

Bismuth exports soared to X kg in 2021, growing by 800% against the previous year's figure. In general, exports, however, saw a sharp curtailment. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2015 with an increase of 1,092%. The volume of export peaked at X kg in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, the exports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, bismuth exports surged to $X in 2021. Overall, exports, however, continue to indicate a abrupt downturn. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 with an increase of 1,417%. The level of export peaked at $X in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

Tunisia was the largest exporter of bismuth in Africa, with the volume of exports accounting for X kg, which was approx. 89% of total exports in 2021. It was distantly followed by South Africa (X kg), comprising an 11% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to bismuth exports from Tunisia stood at -27.0%. South Africa (-22.6%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Tunisia (+89 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2021, the share of South Africa (-3.2 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.

In value terms, the largest bismuth supplying countries in Africa were Tunisia ($X) and South Africa ($X).

South Africa, with a CAGR of -5.7%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, among the main exporting countries over the period under review.

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2021, with a decrease of -70.5% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, posted strong growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 an increase of 5,721% against the previous year. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton, and then dropped sharply in the following year.

Prices varied noticeably country of origin: the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per ton), while Tunisia totaled $X per ton.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by South Africa (+20.5%).

Imports in Africa

In 2021, bismuth imports in Africa soared to X tons, rising by 107% against the year before. Over the period under review, imports enjoyed a remarkable increase. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, bismuth imports dropped to $X in 2021. Overall, imports, however, continue to indicate a perceptible reduction. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 when imports increased by 41% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

Tanzania represented the main importer of bismuth in Africa, with the volume of imports finishing at X tons, which was near 46% of total imports in 2021. Tunisia (X kg) took the second position in the ranking, distantly followed by South Africa (X kg) and Egypt (X kg). All these countries together took near 41% share of total imports. Morocco (X kg), Namibia (X kg) and Algeria (X kg) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Tanzania was also the fastest-growing in terms of the bismuth imports, with a CAGR of +401.1% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Egypt (+37.9%), Namibia (+27.0%), Tunisia (+16.1%) and Algeria (+13.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. South Africa experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Morocco (-9.0%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Tanzania, Egypt, Tunisia and Namibia increased by +46, +5, +4.9 and +1.7 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, the largest bismuth importing markets in Africa were South Africa ($X), Tunisia ($X) and Morocco ($X), together comprising 81% of total imports. These countries were followed by Algeria, Egypt, Tanzania and Namibia, which together accounted for a further 9.9%.

Tanzania, with a CAGR of +26.7%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the import price in Africa amounted to $X per ton, reducing by -55.4% against the previous year. In general, the import price faced a abrupt slump. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when the import price increased by 6.9%. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, import prices remained at a lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably country of destination: the country with the highest price was Morocco ($X per ton), while Tanzania ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
