In 2021, overseas shipments of bituminous mixtures increased by 934% to X tons, rising for the second year in a row after two years of decline. In general, exports saw a significant increase. As a result, the exports attained the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

In value terms, bituminous mixtures exports surged to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, exports posted a significant increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 844%. The level of export peaked in 2021 and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Exports by Country

Togo prevails in exports structure, reaching X tons, which was near 90% of total exports in 2021. It was distantly followed by Ghana (X tons), committing a 7.3% share of total exports. South Africa (X tons) held a minor share of total exports.

Togo was also the fastest-growing in terms of the bituminous mixtures exports, with a CAGR of +2,178.3% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Ghana (+128.7%) displayed positive paces of growth. By contrast, South Africa (-1.1%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Togo and Ghana increased by +90 and +7.1 percentage points, respectively.

In value terms, Togo ($X) remains the largest bituminous mixtures supplier in Africa, comprising 89% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Ghana ($X), with a 7.1% share of total exports.

In Togo, bituminous mixtures exports expanded at an average annual rate of +99.8% over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Ghana (+88.3% per year) and South Africa (-3.0% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in Africa amounted to $X per ton, declining by -80.8% against the previous year. In general, the export price recorded a abrupt decrease. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 when the export price increased by 288%. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per ton, and then dropped significantly in the following year.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per ton), while Ghana ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by South Africa (-1.9%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

In 2021, purchases abroad of bituminous mixtures decreased by -6.7% to X tons, falling for the second consecutive year after three years of growth. Over the period under review, imports, however, posted modest growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 when imports increased by 49%. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, bituminous mixtures imports stood at $X in 2021. Overall, imports showed a pronounced shrinkage. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2014 when imports increased by 57%. The level of import peaked at $X in 2019; however, from 2020 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2021, Ethiopia (X tons) represented the largest importer of bituminous mixtures, making up 33% of total imports. Senegal (X tons) took the second position in the ranking, followed by Benin (X tons), Rwanda (X tons) and Zambia (X tons). All these countries together held near 35% share of total imports. Botswana (X tons), Tanzania (X tons), Zimbabwe (X tons), Kenya (X tons), Democratic Republic of the Congo (X tons), Cameroon (X tons) and Malawi (X tons) took a minor share of total imports.

Imports into Ethiopia increased at an average annual rate of +12.9% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Benin (+57.2%), Rwanda (+51.3%), Democratic Republic of the Congo (+24.4%), Cameroon (+12.7%), Kenya (+10.4%), Zambia (+10.4%), Senegal (+5.2%), Botswana (+3.0%) and Malawi (+1.6%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Benin emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Africa, with a CAGR of +57.2% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Zimbabwe (-5.8%) and Tanzania (-10.4%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2021, the share of Ethiopia, Benin, Rwanda, Zambia, Senegal and Democratic Republic of the Congo increased by +20, +9.9, +6.9, +3.3, +3 and +1.6 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Ethiopia ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported bituminous mixtures in Africa, comprising 30% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Benin ($X), with an 8.9% share of total imports. It was followed by Zambia, with a 7.7% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in Ethiopia totaled +9.1%. The remaining importing countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: Benin (+50.5% per year) and Zambia (+9.3% per year).

Import Prices by Country

In 2021, the import price in Africa amounted to $X per ton, jumping by 19% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, continues to indicate a noticeable decrease. The level of import peaked at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Prices varied noticeably country of destination: the country with the highest price was Cameroon ($X per ton), while Senegal ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
