The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 when exports increased by 43%. The level of export peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In 2022, South Africa (X tons), Kenya (X tons) and Morocco (X tons) represented the key exporter of blankets and traveling rugs (except electric blankets) in Africa, committing 79% of total export. It was distantly followed by Egypt (X tons), constituting an 8.3% share of total exports. Uganda (X tons) and Cote d'Ivoire (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the leading exporting countries, was attained by Uganda (with a CAGR of +20.2%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

The growth pace was the most rapid in 2017 when the export price increased by 101%. Over the period under review, the export prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Morocco ($X per ton), while Uganda ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

In value terms, blanket imports expanded remarkably to $X in 2022. Over the period under review, imports showed a noticeable descent. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 when imports increased by 22%. Over the period under review, imports attained the peak figure at $X in 2013; however, from 2014 to 2022, imports failed to regain momentum.

Libya (X tons), Algeria (X tons), Mozambique (X tons), Somalia (X tons), Tanzania (X tons), Sudan (X tons), Kenya (X tons), South Africa (X tons), Mauritania (X tons), Cameroon (X tons), Egypt (X tons) and Botswana (X tons) represented roughly 72% of total imports in 2022. Uganda (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2022, the biggest increases were recorded for Mozambique (with a CAGR of +25.1%), while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, the largest blanket importing markets in Africa were Libya ($X), Algeria ($X) and Tanzania ($X), with a combined 34% share of total imports. Sudan, Kenya, Somalia, South Africa, Mozambique, Mauritania, Egypt, Cameroon, Botswana and Uganda lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 43%.

Mozambique, with a CAGR of +31.6%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

In 2022, the import price in Africa amounted to $X per ton, increasing by 11% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price, however, continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 an increase of 16%. Over the period under review, import prices attained the peak figure at $X per ton in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2022, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2022, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Tanzania ($X per ton), while Uganda ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Cameroon (+10.3%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
