The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 when exports increased by 42% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons. From 2016 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, brassiere, girdle and corset exports expanded notably to $X in 2021. Total exports indicated a buoyant increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +6.3% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, exports increased by +27.8% against 2017 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 when exports increased by 110% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of $X. From 2016 to 2021, the growth of the exports failed to regain momentum.

Exports by Country

In 2021, Morocco (X tons) was the largest exporter of brassieres, girdles and corsets, mixing up 50% of total exports. Tunisia (X tons) held a 19% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by South Africa (16%), Madagascar (5.7%) and Lesotho (4.9%). The following exporters - Egypt (X tons) and Mauritius (X tons) - each finished at a 3.9% share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to brassiere, girdle and corset exports from Morocco stood at +14.7%. At the same time, Madagascar (+23.1%), Lesotho (+13.8%) and South Africa (+1.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Madagascar emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Africa, with a CAGR of +23.1% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Tunisia (-3.3%), Egypt (-4.3%) and Mauritius (-34.3%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Morocco (+38 p.p.), Madagascar (+5 p.p.), South Africa (+4.6 p.p.) and Lesotho (+3.7 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total exports, while Mauritius saw its share reduced by -50.8% from 2012 to 2021, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Morocco ($X) remains the largest brassiere, girdle and corset supplier in Africa, comprising 67% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Tunisia ($X), with a 20% share of total exports. It was followed by Madagascar, with a 7.7% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in Morocco stood at +14.1%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Tunisia (-3.6% per year) and Madagascar (+17.5% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2021, the export price in Africa amounted to $X per ton, picking up by 5.4% against the previous year. Overall, the export price recorded a strong expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 an increase of 55%. The level of export peaked in 2021 and is likely to continue growth in years to come.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Madagascar ($X per ton), while South Africa ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Mauritius (+19.1%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2021, approx. X tons of brassieres, girdles and corsets were imported in Africa; growing by 10% on 2020. Over the period under review, imports, however, continue to indicate a pronounced curtailment. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2019 when imports increased by 16%. The volume of import peaked at X tons in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, brassiere, girdle and corset imports stood at $X in 2021. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +3.3% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Morocco (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total imports with a 13% share, followed by Algeria (8.2%) and Libya (7.6%). Namibia (X tons), Djibouti (X tons), Mauritius (X tons), Egypt (X tons), Ghana (X tons) and Tunisia (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Moreover, Morocco emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Africa, with a CAGR of +21.1% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Tunisia (-7.2%) and Mauritius (-25.8%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. South Africa (+17 p.p.), Morocco (+11 p.p.), Libya (+6.5 p.p.), Algeria (+5.9 p.p.), Djibouti (+2.9 p.p.), Namibia (+1.7 p.p.), Egypt (+1.6 p.p.) and Ghana (+1.5 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while Mauritius saw its share reduced by -30.4% from 2012 to 2021, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
