Brassiere Market Size in Africa

In 2021, after two years of decline, there was significant growth in the African brassiere market, when its value increased by 5.3% to $X. The total consumption indicated a measured increase from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +3.0% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Over the period under review, the market hit record highs at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, consumption failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, brassiere production rose slightly to $X in 2021 estimated in export price. The total output value increased at an average annual rate of +2.0% from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2016 with an increase of 34% against the previous year. Over the period under review, production reached the maximum level at $X in 2018; however, from 2019 to 2021, production failed to regain momentum.

Exports in Africa

After two years of growth, shipments abroad of brassieres of textile materials, whether or not elasticated decreased by -22.8% to X units in 2021. Over the period under review, exports recorded a deep downturn. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 when exports increased by 14%. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum at X units in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In value terms, brassiere exports fell notably to $X in 2021. In general, exports recorded a deep reduction. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when exports increased by 33%. The level of export peaked at $X in 2015; however, from 2016 to 2021, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

Tunisia (X units) and South Africa (X units) represented roughly 64% of total exports in 2021. Lesotho (X units) held an 11% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by Ethiopia (9.9%) and Morocco (8.6%). Madagascar (X units) and Mauritius (X units) took a relatively small share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Ethiopia (with a CAGR of +403.6%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In value terms, Tunisia ($X) remains the largest brassiere supplier in Africa, comprising 62% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Morocco ($X), with a 12% share of total exports. It was followed by South Africa, with an 8.6% share.

From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in Tunisia amounted to -4.2%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Morocco (-16.7% per year) and South Africa (+2.2% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Africa stood at $X per unit in 2021, falling by -23.4% against the previous year. Overall, the export price, however, recorded tangible growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2018 when the export price increased by 104% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices hit record highs at $X per unit in 2020, and then contracted rapidly in the following year.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Tunisia ($X per unit), while South Africa ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Mauritius (+18.6%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in Africa

In 2021, imports of brassieres of textile materials, whether or not elasticated in Africa reduced to X units, with a decrease of -4.9% on the previous year. Over the period under review, imports continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 when imports increased by 24%. As a result, imports reached the peak of X units. From 2020 to 2021, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, brassiere imports soared to $X in 2021. Total imports indicated a prominent expansion from 2012 to 2021: its value increased at an average annual rate of +6.1% over the last nine-year period. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, imports increased by +67.8% against 2015 indices. As a result, imports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Imports by Country

South Africa was the largest importing country with an import of around X units, which amounted to 31% of total imports. Algeria (X units) held the second position in the ranking, followed by Tunisia (X units), Morocco (X units) and Libya (X units). All these countries together held near 40% share of total imports. Ghana (X units), Egypt (X units), Togo (X units), Djibouti (X units), Namibia (X units), Mauritius (X units) and Cote d'Ivoire (X units) followed a long way behind the leaders.

Imports into South Africa increased at an average annual rate of +1.6% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Cote d'Ivoire (+54.6%), Togo (+51.9%), Djibouti (+20.2%), Morocco (+19.3%), Tunisia (+18.8%), Algeria (+18.3%), Ghana (+18.0%), Egypt (+14.7%), Libya (+10.5%) and Namibia (+2.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Cote d'Ivoire emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Africa, with a CAGR of +54.6% from 2012-2021. By contrast, Mauritius (-25.9%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Algeria (+12 p.p.), Tunisia (+7.4 p.p.), Morocco (+6.3 p.p.), South Africa (+5.4 p.p.), Libya (+4.3 p.p.), Ghana (+3.3 p.p.), Togo (+3.1 p.p.), Egypt (+2.8 p.p.) and Djibouti (+2.2 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2021, the share of Mauritius (-29.5 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, the largest brassiere importing markets in Africa were South Africa ($X), Tunisia ($X) and Morocco ($X), with a combined 62% share of total imports. These countries were followed by Algeria, Egypt, Togo, Ghana, Libya, Namibia, Mauritius, Cote d'Ivoire and Djibouti, which together accounted for a further 30%.

Cote d'Ivoire, with a CAGR of +49.8%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, among the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Africa stood at $X per unit in 2021, increasing by 27% against the previous year. Import price indicated resilient growth from 2012 to 2021: its price increased at an average annual rate of +6.6% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2021 figures, brassiere import price increased by +62.0% against 2015 indices. As a result, import price reached the peak level and is likely to continue growth in the immediate term.

Prices varied noticeably by country of destination: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Tunisia ($X per unit), while Libya ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
