Breathing Appliances Market Size in Africa

In 2022, the African breathing appliances market decreased by -0.5% to $X, falling for the second consecutive year after two years of growth. Over the period under review, consumption, however, saw resilient growth. As a result, consumption reached the peak level of $X. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of the market failed to regain momentum.

Breathing Appliances Production in Africa

In value terms, breathing appliances production amounted to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. The total production indicated resilient growth from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +9.2% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, production decreased by -3.6% against 2020 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when the production volume increased by 55%. Over the period under review, production attained the maximum level at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, production remained at a lower figure.

Exports in Africa

In 2022, shipments abroad of breathing appliances and gas masks decreased by -29.7% to X units, falling for the second consecutive year after two years of growth. Overall, exports showed a mild downturn. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 when exports increased by 130% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X units. From 2014 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, breathing appliances exports contracted significantly to $X in 2022. In general, exports, however, enjoyed a modest expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 with an increase of 111%. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of the exports remained at a somewhat lower figure.

Exports by Country

South Africa dominates exports structure, finishing at X units, which was approx. 82% of total exports in 2022. Tunisia (X units), Tanzania (X units), Libya (X units) and Kenya (X units) held a minor share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to breathing appliances exports from South Africa stood at -2.7%. At the same time, Libya (+70.2%), Tanzania (+35.3%) and Tunisia (+5.8%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Libya emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Africa, with a CAGR of +70.2% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Kenya (-8.9%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Tanzania, Tunisia and Libya increased by +2.9, +2 and +2 percentage points, respectively.

In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest breathing appliances supplier in Africa, comprising 60% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Tunisia ($X), with a 22% share of total exports. It was followed by Kenya, with a 3.9% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in South Africa amounted to -2.3%. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Tunisia (+31.3% per year) and Kenya (+0.2% per year).

Export Prices by Country

The export price in Africa stood at $X per unit in 2022, rising by 3.1% against the previous year. Export price indicated pronounced growth from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +2.9% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, breathing appliances export price decreased by -15.7% against 2020 indices. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 an increase of 61%. As a result, the export price attained the peak level of $X per unit. From 2021 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Tunisia ($X per unit), while Libya ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Tunisia (+24.1%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Imports in Africa

In 2022, supplies from abroad of breathing appliances and gas masks decreased by -7.6% to X units, falling for the second consecutive year after two years of growth. Overall, imports, however, enjoyed a prominent increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when imports increased by 156% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of X units. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, breathing appliances imports fell to $X in 2022. Total imports indicated notable growth from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +2.5% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports decreased by -14.2% against 2020 indices. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 with an increase of 54%. As a result, imports attained the peak of $X. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

Imports by Country

In 2022, Mozambique (X units) represented the major importer of breathing appliances and gas masks, making up 55% of total imports. South Africa (X units) took the second position in the ranking, followed by Nigeria (X units). All these countries together held approx. 16% share of total imports. The following importers - Libya (X units), Angola (X units), Kenya (X units), Botswana (X units), Algeria (X units) and Malawi (X units) - each accounted for an 11% share of total imports.

Mozambique was also the fastest-growing in terms of the breathing appliances and gas masks imports, with a CAGR of +43.4% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Malawi (+20.2%), Nigeria (+11.8%), Libya (+8.4%), Kenya (+6.9%) and Algeria (+4.4%) displayed positive paces of growth. Botswana experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, South Africa (-3.7%) and Angola (-12.9%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Mozambique (+51 p.p.) and Nigeria (+1.7 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2022, the share of Botswana (-1.8 p.p.), Angola (-17.8 p.p.) and South Africa (-22.1 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, the largest breathing appliances importing markets in Africa were South Africa ($X), Mozambique ($X) and Nigeria ($X), together accounting for 47% of total imports.

Among the main importing countries, Mozambique, with a CAGR of +32.8%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Africa stood at $X per unit in 2022, growing by 5.5% against the previous year. In general, the import price, however, showed a deep downturn. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2017 when the import price increased by 6.7%. Over the period under review, import prices reached the maximum at $X per unit in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, import prices failed to regain momentum.
