In 2021, the African bridge market decreased by -0.4% to $X for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year rising trend. Over the period under review, consumption, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. As a result, consumption attained the peak level of $X. From 2015 to 2021, the growth of the market remained at a lower figure.

In 2021, overseas shipments of bridges, bridge sections, towers and lattice masts (of iron or steel) increased by 23% to X tons, rising for the fourth year in a row after three years of decline. Over the period under review, exports, however, showed a deep downturn. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 when exports increased by 27% against the previous year. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X tons. From 2015 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, bridge exports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. In general, exports, however, continue to indicate a abrupt descent. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2018 when exports increased by 29%. The level of export peaked at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.
Exports by Country
In 2021, South Africa (X tons), Morocco (X tons) and Egypt (X tons) represented the main exporter of bridges, bridge sections, towers and lattice masts (of iron or steel) in Africa, constituting 72% of total export. Namibia (X tons) held a 13% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by Angola (4.6%). The following exporters - Algeria (X tons) and Tunisia (X tons) - each accounted for a 3.5% share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Namibia (with a CAGR of +51.6%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Egypt ($X), South Africa ($X) and Morocco ($X) were the countries with the highest levels of exports in 2021, together accounting for 80% of total exports. These countries were followed by Namibia, Angola, Algeria and Tunisia, which together accounted for a further 14%.
In terms of the main exporting countries, Namibia, with a CAGR of +33.5%, recorded the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of exports, over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Export Prices by Country
The export price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2021, dropping by -2.4% against the previous year. Overall, the export price continues to indicate a noticeable shrinkage. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 an increase of 34% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, the export prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Egypt ($X per ton), while Namibia ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Algeria (+2.6%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.

In 2021, approx. X tons of bridges, bridge sections, towers and lattice masts (of iron or steel) were imported in Africa; dropping by -6.4% against 2020. In general, imports saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 59%. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2015 to 2021, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, bridge imports expanded notably to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports, however, saw a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 80%. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X. From 2015 to 2021, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.
Imports by Country
The countries with the highest levels of bridge imports in 2021 were Nigeria (X tons), Democratic Republic of the Congo (X tons), Ghana (X tons), Tanzania (X tons), Uganda (X tons), Kenya (X tons), Senegal (X tons), Ethiopia (X tons), Guinea (X tons), Angola (X tons), Cote d'Ivoire (X tons) and Morocco (X tons), together finishing at 68% of total import. Zambia (X tons) took a minor share of total imports.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of purchases, amongst the main importing countries, was attained by Uganda (with a CAGR of +31.6%), while imports for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Ghana ($X), Democratic Republic of the Congo ($X) and Nigeria ($X) appeared to be the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, together accounting for 30% of total imports. Kenya, Senegal, Tanzania, Ethiopia, Angola, Cote d'Ivoire, Guinea, Morocco, Uganda and Zambia lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 42%.
Cote d'Ivoire, with a CAGR of +32.0%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, in terms of the main importing countries over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Import Prices by Country
The import price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2021, increasing by 16% against the previous year. Overall, the import price continues to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. Over the period under review, import prices hit record highs at $X per ton in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, import prices stood at a somewhat lower figure.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Ghana ($X per ton), while Uganda ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
