Exports in Africa
In 2021, overseas shipments of bromides and bromide oxides, iodides and iodide oxides increased by 116% to X tons, rising for the second year in a row after three years of decline. Over the period under review, exports, however, recorded a relatively flat trend pattern. The volume of export peaked at X tons in 2016; however, from 2017 to 2021, the exports remained at a lower figure.
In value terms, bromides, iodides and oxids thereof exports skyrocketed to $X in 2021. In general, exports posted a pronounced expansion. As a result, the exports reached the peak and are likely to continue growth in the immediate term.
Exports by Country
Ethiopia was the key exporting country with an export of around X tons, which amounted to 50% of total exports. It was distantly followed by Angola (X tons), Tunisia (X tons) and South Africa (X tons), together making up a 48% share of total exports. Senegal (X tons) took a minor share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of shipments, amongst the leading exporting countries, was attained by Senegal (with a CAGR of +80.6%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In value terms, Ethiopia ($X) emerged as the largest bromides, iodides and oxids thereof supplier in Africa, comprising 57% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Tunisia ($X), with an 18% share of total exports. It was followed by South Africa, with an 11% share.
From 2012 to 2021, the average annual growth rate of value in Ethiopia was relatively modest. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Tunisia (+28.0% per year) and South Africa (-4.1% per year).
Export Prices by Country
The export price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2021, with an increase of 5.3% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export price enjoyed notable growth. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2017 an increase of 101% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the export prices reached the maximum in 2021 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, the country with the highest price was Senegal ($X per ton), while Angola ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Tunisia (+29.1%), while the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the export price figures.
Imports of Bromides And Bromide Oxides, Iodides And Iodide Oxides
Imports in Africa
Bromides, iodides and oxids thereof imports dropped notably to X tons in 2021, waning by -15.4% compared with 2020 figures. Overall, imports, however, saw a mild expansion. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2020 when imports increased by 94% against the previous year. As a result, imports attained the peak of X tons, and then dropped significantly in the following year.
In value terms, bromides, iodides and oxids thereof imports declined markedly to $X in 2021. In general, imports showed a deep contraction. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2016 when imports increased by 45% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports attained the maximum at $X in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.
Imports by Country
Ghana represented the major importing country with an import of around X tons, which recorded 48% of total imports. Cameroon (X tons) ranks second in terms of the total imports with a 22% share, followed by Nigeria (7.7%) and Equatorial Guinea (4.7%). The following importers - Senegal (X tons), Angola (X tons), Sudan (X tons) and South Africa (X tons) - together made up 13% of total imports.
Imports into Ghana increased at an average annual rate of +67.8% from 2012 to 2021. At the same time, Senegal (+94.2%), Equatorial Guinea (+22.8%), Sudan (+17.7%), Cameroon (+11.2%) and Nigeria (+6.3%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Senegal emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Africa, with a CAGR of +94.2% from 2012-2021. By contrast, South Africa (-5.9%) and Angola (-26.5%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. Ghana (+47 p.p.), Cameroon (+13 p.p.), Senegal (+4.2 p.p.), Equatorial Guinea (+3.9 p.p.), Nigeria (+2.8 p.p.) and Sudan (+2.5 p.p.) significantly strengthened its position in terms of the total imports, while South Africa and Angola saw its share reduced by -2% and -54.8% from 2012 to 2021, respectively.
In value terms, Cameroon ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported bromides and bromide oxides, iodides and iodide oxides in Africa, comprising 34% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was held by Ghana ($X), with a 15% share of total imports. It was followed by Nigeria, with an 11% share.
In Cameroon, bromides, iodides and oxids thereof imports expanded at an average annual rate of +8.1% over the period from 2012-2021. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Ghana (+29.9% per year) and Nigeria (-2.2% per year).
Import Prices by Country
The import price in Africa stood at $X per ton in 2021, which is down by -11.5% against the previous year. In general, the import price continues to indicate a deep setback. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2013 when the import price increased by 30%. As a result, import price reached the peak level of $X per ton. From 2014 to 2021, the import prices remained at a somewhat lower figure.
Prices varied noticeably country of destination: the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per ton), while Ghana ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.
