After two years of growth, the African twig broom market decreased by -10% to $X in 2021. The market value increased at an average annual rate of +1.1% from 2012 to 2021; the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. In 2021, overseas shipments of brooms and brushes of twigs were finally on the rise to reach X units for the first time since 2018, thus ending a two-year declining trend. In general, exports, however, saw a mild descent. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2014 with an increase of 12%. As a result, the exports attained the peak of X units. From 2015 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, twig broom exports expanded significantly to $X in 2021. The total export value increased at an average annual rate of +2.9% over the period from 2012 to 2021; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2014 with an increase of 32% against the previous year. As a result, the exports reached the peak of $X. From 2015 to 2021, the growth of the exports remained at a lower figure.

Exports by Country

In 2021, Egypt (X units) represented the major exporter of brooms and brushes of twigs, generating 55% of total exports. It was distantly followed by South Africa (X units) and Kenya (X units), together achieving a 39% share of total exports. Tanzania (X units) held a minor share of total exports.

From 2012 to 2021, the biggest increases were recorded for Egypt (with a CAGR of +41.0%), while shipments for the other leaders experienced mixed trends in the exports figures.

In value terms, the largest twig broom supplying countries in Africa were Egypt ($X), South Africa ($X) and Kenya ($X), together accounting for 95% of total exports.

Egypt, with a CAGR of +37.0%, saw the highest growth rate of the value of exports, in terms of the main exporting countries over the period under review, while shipments for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

In 2021, the export price in Africa amounted to $X per unit, rising by 2.1% against the previous year. Over the last nine years, it increased at an average annual rate of +4.0%. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2013 an increase of 20%. Over the period under review, the export prices reached the peak figure at $X per unit in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2021, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per unit), while Tanzania ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.

From 2012 to 2021, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by South Africa (+2.5%), while the other leaders experienced a decline in the export price figures.

Imports in Africa

Twig broom imports skyrocketed to X units in 2021, rising by 30% against the previous year's figure. Total imports indicated slight growth from 2012 to 2021: its volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.6% over the last nine years. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2013 when imports increased by 37%. The volume of import peaked at X units in 2017; however, from 2018 to 2021, imports failed to regain momentum.

In value terms, twig broom imports surged to $X in 2021. Over the period under review, imports continue to indicate a relatively flat trend pattern. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 with an increase of 43% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2021, imports stood at a somewhat lower figure.

Imports by Country

South Africa prevails in imports structure, finishing at X units, which was approx. 51% of total imports in 2021. Algeria (X units), Botswana (X units), Ethiopia (X units), Nigeria (X units), Madagascar (X units), Angola (X units), Senegal (X units), Morocco (X units), Kenya (X units), Togo (X units), Tanzania (X units) and Rwanda (X units) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2021, average annual rates of growth with regard to twig broom imports into South Africa stood at +17.7%. At the same time, Togo (+37.8%), Madagascar (+33.5%), Rwanda (+19.0%), Kenya (+14.2%), Senegal (+7.0%), Nigeria (+2.6%), Angola (+2.3%) and Botswana (+1.2%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Togo emerged as the fastest-growing importer imported in Africa, with a CAGR of +37.8% from 2012-2021. Ethiopia experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. By contrast, Morocco (-5.1%), Tanzania (-7.3%) and Algeria (-19.2%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of South Africa (+37 p.p.), Madagascar (+2.4 p.p.) and Togo (+1.7 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2021, the share of Morocco (-1.8 p.p.), Tanzania (-2.2 p.p.) and Algeria (-29.3 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, South Africa ($X), Botswana ($X) and Nigeria ($X) constituted the countries with the highest levels of imports in 2021, with a combined 27% share of total imports. Ethiopia, Senegal, Angola, Morocco, Togo, Rwanda, Algeria, Kenya, Tanzania and Madagascar lagged somewhat behind, together accounting for a further 41%.

In terms of the main importing countries, Togo, with a CAGR of +46.5%, saw the highest rates of growth with regard to the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.

Import Prices by Country

The import price in Africa stood at $X per unit in 2021, declining by -6.3% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the import price showed a slight contraction. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2014 an increase of 5.5%. As a result, import price attained the peak level of $X per unit. From 2015 to 2021, the import prices failed to regain momentum.

There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major importing countries. In 2021, amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Togo ($X per unit), while South Africa ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
