In value terms, broom, brush, and mop production rose to $X in 2022 estimated in export price. Overall, production, however, posted a buoyant increase. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2018 with an increase of 21%. Over the period under review, production attained the maximum level at $X in 2020; however, from 2021 to 2022, production stood at a somewhat lower figure.

In 2022, approx. X units of brooms, brushes, and mops were exported in Africa; growing by 30% compared with 2021 figures. Over the period under review, exports, however, continue to indicate a mild setback. The volume of export peaked at X units in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the exports failed to regain momentum.
In value terms, broom, brush, and mop exports expanded to $X in 2022. In general, exports showed a relatively flat trend pattern. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2021 with an increase of 14%. The level of export peaked at $X in 2014; however, from 2015 to 2022, the exports stood at a somewhat lower figure.
Exports by Country
South Africa represented the key exporting country with an export of about X units, which reached 32% of total exports. Tunisia (X units) ranks second in terms of the total exports with a 15% share, followed by Egypt (12%), Mauritius (11%), Nigeria (11%) and Morocco (9.9%). Kenya (X units) took a little share of total exports.
From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to broom, brush, and mop exports from South Africa stood at -4.5%. At the same time, Nigeria (+64.5%) and Morocco (+12.1%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Nigeria emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Africa, with a CAGR of +64.5% from 2012-2022. By contrast, Egypt (-1.3%), Kenya (-2.5%), Mauritius (-3.3%) and Tunisia (-4.6%) illustrated a downward trend over the same period. While the share of Nigeria (+11 p.p.) and Morocco (+7.2 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2022, the share of Mauritius (-2.2 p.p.), Tunisia (-5.6 p.p.) and South Africa (-11.5 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
In value terms, South Africa ($X) remains the largest broom, brush, and mop supplier in Africa, comprising 46% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Egypt ($X), with a 16% share of total exports. It was followed by Mauritius, with a 14% share.
From 2012 to 2022, the average annual rate of growth in terms of value in South Africa was relatively modest. In the other countries, the average annual rates were as follows: Egypt (+6.5% per year) and Mauritius (+1.0% per year).
Export Prices by Country
The export price in Africa stood at $X per unit in 2022, reducing by -20.8% against the previous year. Export price indicated notable growth from 2012 to 2022: its price increased at an average annual rate of +2.2% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 when the export price increased by 25%. Over the period under review, the export prices attained the peak figure at $X per unit in 2021, and then dropped remarkably in the following year.
There were significant differences in the average prices amongst the major exporting countries. In 2022, amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was South Africa ($X per unit), while Nigeria ($X per unit) was amongst the lowest.
From 2012 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Egypt (+7.9%), while the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
Imports of Brooms, Brushes, And Mops
Imports in Africa
In 2022, overseas purchases of brooms, brushes, and mops increased by 0.6% to X units, rising for the sixth consecutive year after two years of decline. The total import volume increased at an average annual rate of +1.4% over the period from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The growth pace was the most rapid in 2019 when imports increased by 22% against the previous year. The volume of import peaked in 2022 and is likely to see gradual growth in the immediate term.
In value terms, broom, brush, and mop imports fell slightly to $X in 2022. The total import value increased at an average annual rate of +2.7% over the period from 2012 to 2022; however, the trend pattern indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded in certain years. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2013 when imports increased by 17% against the previous year. The level of import peaked at $X in 2021, and then fell slightly in the following year.
Imports by Country
In 2022, South Africa (X units), distantly followed by Kenya (X units), Algeria (X units) and Ghana (X units) represented the largest importers of brooms, brushes, and mops, together constituting 48% of total imports. Morocco (X units), Cameroon (X units), Libya (X units), Tunisia (X units), Djibouti (X units), Nigeria (X units), Angola (X units), Sudan (X units) and Egypt (X units) took a minor share of total imports.

While the share of Ghana (+3.1 p.p.) and Cameroon (+2.6 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total imports from 2012-2022, the share of Libya (-1.8 p.p.), South Africa (-2.7 p.p.) and Angola (-4.6 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.
