Over the period under review, the exports attained the maximum in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in years to come.

In value terms, cabbage exports skyrocketed to $X in 2022. In general, exports enjoyed prominent growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2015 with an increase of 23% against the previous year. Over the period under review, the exports reached the maximum in 2022 and are expected to retain growth in the immediate term.

Morocco represented the main exporter of cabbage and other brassicas in Africa, with the volume of exports finishing at X tons, which was near 63% of total exports in 2022. South Africa (X tons) held a 16% share (based on physical terms) of total exports, which put it in second place, followed by Mali (7%), Kenya (5.6%) and Ethiopia (4.6%). Egypt (X tons) followed a long way behind the leaders.

From 2012 to 2022, average annual rates of growth with regard to cabbage exports from Morocco stood at +24.8%. At the same time, Mali (+67.8%), Kenya (+22.7%) and Ethiopia (+7.4%) displayed positive paces of growth. Moreover, Mali emerged as the fastest-growing exporter exported in Africa, with a CAGR of +67.8% from 2012-2022. Egypt and South Africa experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. While the share of Morocco (+38 p.p.), Mali (+6.8 p.p.) and Kenya (+3 p.p.) increased significantly in terms of the total exports from 2012-2022, the share of Ethiopia (-3.6 p.p.), Egypt (-5.8 p.p.) and South Africa (-36 p.p.) displayed negative dynamics.

In value terms, Morocco ($X) remains the largest cabbage supplier in Africa, comprising 59% of total exports. The second position in the ranking was held by Kenya ($X), with a 16% share of total exports. It was followed by South Africa, with an 11% share.

From 2012 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of value in Morocco totaled +15.4%. The remaining exporting countries recorded the following average annual rates of exports growth: Kenya (+31.9% per year) and South Africa (-4.0% per year).

Export Prices by Country

In 2022, the export price in Africa amounted to $X per ton, with a decrease of -9.5% against the previous year. In general, the export price recorded a perceptible decrease. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2021 when the export price increased by 22% against the previous year. The level of export peaked at $X per ton in 2012; however, from 2013 to 2022, the export prices failed to regain momentum.

Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top suppliers, the country with the highest price was Egypt ($X per ton), while Mali ($X per ton) was amongst the lowest.

In 2022, the amount of cabbage and other brassicas imported in Africa reached X tons, surging by 1.8% on 2021 figures. In general, imports showed a buoyant expansion. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2020 with an increase of 66%. As a result, imports reached the peak of X tons. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of imports remained at a lower figure.

In value terms, cabbage imports dropped to $X in 2022. Total imports indicated prominent growth from 2012 to 2022: its value increased at an average annual rate of +5.2% over the last decade. The trend pattern, however, indicated some noticeable fluctuations being recorded throughout the analyzed period. Based on 2022 figures, imports decreased by -7.1% against 2020 indices. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2020 when imports increased by 39%. As a result, imports reached the peak of $X. From 2021 to 2022, the growth of imports failed to regain momentum.

Imports by Country

Mauritania was the key importing country with an import of about X tons, which recorded 62% of total imports. It was distantly followed by Lesotho (X tons), comprising a 19% share of total imports. The following importers - Djibouti (X tons), Swaziland (X tons) and Cabo Verde (X tons) - together made up 7.7% of total imports.

Mauritania was also the fastest-growing in terms of the cabbage and other brassicas imports, with a CAGR of +24.5% from 2012 to 2022. At the same time, Lesotho (+13.1%), Cabo Verde (+10.0%) and Swaziland (+2.7%) displayed positive paces of growth. Djibouti experienced a relatively flat trend pattern. From 2012 to 2022, the share of Mauritania and Lesotho increased by +42 and +2.9 percentage points, respectively. The shares of the other countries remained relatively stable throughout the analyzed period.

In value terms, Mauritania ($X) constitutes the largest market for imported cabbage and other brassicas in Africa, comprising 48% of total imports. The second position in the ranking was taken by Lesotho ($X), with a 9.5% share of total imports. It was followed by Cabo Verde, with a 4.6% share.
